is that compared you your perfect up to standard crap downloaded from Bit torrent sites. My video's required no modifications according to NZ and he just needed to activate the correct codec on the player. Why dont you download one, ive posted a link to one in the wiki. you will see theres nothing wrong with it (apart from that it wont play on the current firmware). Sometimes you come out with perfect sense Charbax, other times your like you are in your videos, a typical fanboy, who wont let his obsession be criticized by anyone, no matter how flawed it appears to be at the moment. Im sure they will fix the problems eventually, until then its a paperweight charbax. Plain and simple.

And finally, i couldnt care less how to encode videos, thats right, its not a hobby of mine, or a pastime (i have a life). I want to put the disc in and rip it then play it off my media center and archive the DVD. Worked so far on everything ive done. But i dont download pirated films from torrent sites and garbage like that, then pretend like theres some kind of standard to what others have done just because its become popular in some form or another.

Then, if you pretend you have a life with all that overpriced bloatware Apple hardware around you, quit spending your whole days in this forum complaining about your BS file formats in this forum when you clearly have no idea what Internet videos are made of.

There are freaking standards cause there freaking needs to be standards.

You don't want to LEARN anything. You just want to whine in a whine out in forums the whole day.

No your wrong Charbax. When this device does the basics of what i bought it for, then i wont need to sit waiting for Archos to release fixes from one month to the next. I got rid of my 7 because of this crap, and i really wish id been a bit more patient and waited for someone else, preferably Apple as they can at least get things right to release something to do the job. Unfortunately as you will be very quick to point out, Apple will never make a device like this, as in one that claims to play most formats of videos, as they know its a fools game. and yes i do have a life, and a girlfriend lol, so i dont like to spend all of my time messing with a bloody PMP .

As for standards, the kind of videos that are mostly distributed via P2p and bit torrent, generally dont adhere to any standards. Yes i agree that standards are supposed to be there to create uniformity and compatibility, but seriously Charbax, open your eyes. At the moment, this thing is broken. Unfortunately its not simply a hardware problem that can be RMA'd its software and needs specialists to get it sorted (like im sure they are) . My only real apology, im sure you guys deserve is that im impatient.

99% of BitTorrented videos follow the encoding standards.

When some newbie posts a non-standard video file on BitTorrents, it usually takes only a few hours and some other release group will re-encode it to a standard format and re-release it and the old non-standard file goes away and nobody downloads that anymore.

Apparently Archos can't play XviD with 3 warppoints. Not too sure if GMC and Qpel are supported. I tried a file with all of them, and it displayed blocks, meaning it can't play them.

Charbax. This is personal attacks.

If it can't play a video, it should be blocked, like how Archos blocks high profile on the 5.

It doesn't matter how poorly someone's videos are encoded, it is Archos' job to play it. If it doesn't play it, it failed as a video player.

GMC and Qpel are not part of Mpeg4 Advanced Simple Profile nor DivX Home Theatre standards. So if Archos supports any of those, it's just extra.

Wrong. It matters that Archos supports the standards well.

Good examples of those are the videos that people download the most on BitTorrent networks.

For example, I'm pretty certain Archos supports 99% of the files on the 500 most downloaded movies on: http://www.mininova.org/cat-list/4/leech

And probably also Archos supports 99.5% of the top downloaded TV shows: http://www.mininova.org/cat-list/8/leech

Apart from all of the 720p MKV movies yet of course, although 720p MKV movies probably are less than 5% of the top-500 movie files that are being downloaded, but we can hope Archos and Texas Instruments can optimize the supported bitrate to also support all those and not only the MKV 720p TV shows.

or any of the movies on lists such as http://torrentfreak.com/top-10-most-pir ... nt-091026/

Then after that, if they can also support whatever non standard things after that then fine, but it is absolutely not required of any device to support the 2500 non-standard ways to encode videos.

Wow, then I find it extraordinary that you would imply that a PMP shall play any encoded files that are not part of the standards used by 98% of videos on BitTorrents.

Then you speak about VLC to be installed on an embedded Linux device with hardware acceleration which is also a completely misguided view on the way consumer electronics works.

You claim to be an image codification expert, yet you do not recognize that there is an ISO/IEC MPEG-4 international standard, MPEG-4 Part 2 (MPEG-4 ASP) standard, and a DivX Home Theater certification: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DivX#Profiles

Archos supports all of these standards for Mpeg4 in AVI container contents up to 1280x720. So in fact Archos supports even more than these standards.

So your claim that Archos supports only 33% of AVI files is pure nonsense.

where you get that idiotic number ??!
the avis the Archos 5 IT didnt play strangely play very well on ym PMP Samsung P3.
My P3 doesnt tell me that somce codecs arent supported

I once thought you were a good guy but your way to defend is simply aggresive and unproven, if you wanna use numbers, youve got to give us your source of information! Your not my close friend who I'd believe what you just made up.

Archos has much better AVI DivX H264 and other video codecs support than your Samsung P3.

Samsung doesn't support DivX Home Theatre profile correctly, DivX 3, DivX 5, nor higher bitrate Mpeg4, nor full B-frames, full AC3 audio in Mpeg4 files.. Much less up to 720p on HDMI output support...

Features count for nothing if they are released half baked Charbax.

Yes, it is part of the standard. It is optional. Any DivX certified DVD players will play them.

Archos don't support it = bad

If the Samsung P3 played something the Archos 5 can't, that's a SHAME.

Of the 200 Million DivX Certified DVD players out there most of them will NOT play GMC and Qpel videos.

Quarterpixel and GMC are both forbidden under scene rules due to lack of hardware support.

Speaking of DivX, DivX encoders have also been banned from scene releases since 2005, on account of how much DivX sucks.

DivX pro costs money and is kind of painful to crack and using XviD for encoding is illegal (which is why the place to download XviD encoder stuff are kind of illegal hosted in the Tcheque Republic or Hungary and that contributors to XviD are most often working behind anonymous nicknames). Both provide about the same quality. Well, perhaps XviD is slightly better, but it's not really distinguishable.

What the Charbax slowly you discredit yourself in the section of Multimedia maybe you should get the facts straight before claiming things you have no idea off encoding with XviD isn't illegal, hosting the binaries in certain countries of the world could be seen as illegal because of patent and mpegla license issues, but the encoder/decoder itself isn't illegal if provided in source form anywhere in the world under the GPL.
Also non of the core XviD contributors is hiding himself you can get all their names officially, the core developers are even commercial now since some years http://www.xvidsolutions.com/Company.9.0.html and license XviD to other Device Manufactures, did you never wondered why they use the official XviD logo now ? ;).

Gwagain,

Please check out this thread:

http://forum.archosfans.com/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=25979

If you don't need the FM Transmitter, the GPS, Android, etc. and you just want/need a PMP that ACTUALLY PLAYS WHATEVER YOU THROW AT IT without the need of waiting for firmware releases get one of the new PMPs mentioned on that thread or wait a bit. I'm pretty sure (looking at the tables provided on that thread) that those units will play everything rather well!

As far as expecting Charbax to answer objectively (I've tried to tell him in a few threads that he should be objective and state the facts, not promises or useless information) keep waiting, that's not going to happen... like... ever. :-p

Thanks a lot Eagle 1.

Really I don't need the FM Transmitter. In Spain radio music sucks :P. I have a GPS in my HTC HD Touch and prefer Android instead of any version of Windows Mobile. I really bought A5IT to replace my iTouch second generation. I'm really interested in the multimedia part of the device.

there are things that can improve (stability, accepted video format) but so far my Archos 5 keeps going and going. either you guys have a defect device or i don't know what problems you have.

i am happy - very happy with it. find something similar with 500 gb, the battery life and screen size/resolution. nothing there!

ye ye, thats how my device started, nice and all and I thought: "Why they complain so much, its ok so far". After a while these constant freezes came which made me drop the device...
Got a Vaio P now, with Win XP working like a dream :) even 720p with powerDVD (cuz it uses hardware acceleration).
Sure its bigger and more expensive (got mine for 400 Ôé¼) but at least it works flawless imo...
And theres no bigger software archiv as the ones for Windows I think :D

Hi all!

Yesterday afternoon I kept on testing the device. I created in the Archos Video folder new 5 folders: DIVx, MPEG4, AVI, OGM and MKV and downloaded different video files of these formats.

DIVx: 3 videos
AVI: 20 videos
MPEG4: 3 videos
OGM: 1 video
MKV: 15 videos

First, I tried to play all the AVI videos. The result 18 out of 20 (Good)
Second, I tried to play all the DIVx videos. The result 2 out of 3 (Good)
Third, I tried to play all the MPEG4 videos. The result 0 out of 3 (Very bad)
Fourth, I tried to play all the OMG video but Archos displayed the folder was empty (┬┐?)
Fifth, I tried to play all the MKV videos. The result 1 out of 15 (Very Bad). The result in most of them was the "H.264 High Profile 5.1" not supported or something like that". The only one MKV played was without displaying subtitles.

Then I deleted OGM and MKV folders and repeated the test.

First, I tried to play all the AVI videos. The result 19 out of 20 (Good). Now I can see one extra video I couldn't before. Amazing!!!!!! (only Blood + impossible to play it).

Second, I tried to play all the DIVx videos. The result now 3 out of 3 (Wowwwwww)

Third, I tried to play all the MPEG4 videos. The result 2 out of 3 (What's happening here? XD)

All the tests were carried out with my hearphones connected to A5IT (sounded great yesterday).

Then, I downloaded music from my iTunes library. And when I tried to play it with my hearphones connected, the music was played only by the speaker not by my hearphones. I tried playing videos and the same outcome. I don't know why I can't use my hearphones :(

Apart the disturbing defective pixels when the background of the image is black or a similar color.

I wrote to Archos Technical Support without response :(
