Whats so special about archos 10..

Ive been a fan of archos for quite a while now, i bought a 605, and upgraded to an archos 5 recently... I really like their products.

However, i dont understand what is good about this netbook of theirs. Theres no point to releasing the exact same product as other competitors 1 year later. This netbook of theirs will fail for 1 main reason. People will not want to buy a product from a (practically) unknown (german or was it french) company, as opposed to buy one identical one (and probably with a lower price), from big manufacturers such as Asus, HP, Dell, etc etc.

The various topics in this forum contain debates about pricing on shelves vs. MSRP, the technology being boring, and what new, if anything Archos brings to the netbook market. From my point of view, it's an average (at best) netbook, nothing new technically, with a somewhat better than average software bundle (some of it bloat..., er, trialware).

To put it bluntly, it looks like a quick grab for cash in a market that Archos should have already been ready for. Now netbooks are exploding everyone else is getting the headlines, and Archos quietly shows their "me too" privately at CES to invited press. During the information frenzy at CES everyone is blogging about the Sony Vaio P (like it or not) because Sony was smart enough to show it to everyone who who needed to justify writing about something during the show. So what do we have at CES but Archos remaining hush-hush. Why so hush-hush? Hush-hush because Archos is peculiar? Hush-hush because Archos has something so much better than everyone else that no one is allowed to speak of it while CES is happening? Or hush-hush because Archos didn't want all those CES bloggers writing about how mediocre the Archos 10 might be?

Theres no point to releasing the exact same product as other competitors 1 year later.

MSI Wind was released around August.

Asus 1000H was released around August.

Samsung NC10 was released around December.

Acer 10" Netbook is not yet released.

Dell 10" Netbook is not yet released.

Saying that Archos releases it a year late is just not true.

Also, Archos now releases a 6-cell version which MSI Wind only released a version of in September, 6-cell Asus 1000H was released in October.

Also, if Archos releases an Archos 10G with built-in HSDPA, it would be even closer to whatever dates MSI Wind, Asus and Samsung had released such HSDPA built-in versions, if they have yet released such versions at all.

Also, for many months, the MSI Wind and Asus 1000H were only available in very limited numbers, they were in artificially manufactured "out of stock" status everywhere. And Asus released the 1000H at incredibly high price of $649, on purpose not to attract too many people. Only recently, have they been able to deliver high quantities of 10" netbooks to the market.

Which runs most apps faster than the current N270 atom processors, you should do some research before posting, I own several netbooks, including one of the original asus eepcs and have it clocked at 900mhz like the 900 series (er, wonder where the naming convention came from)

The celeron (@900mhz) based netbooks beat the N270 atom based netbooks in performance (mainly because the atom uses "in-order" processing), but they use more power which makes battery life short. But then you get netbooks like the Acer Aspire One with such a crappy battery that it only lasts 1-2 hrs anyway.

The dual-core atom based netbooks later this year will rock. As of now we have crappy stuff based on the single core atom like the Archos 10, and ok ones like the Samsung NC10 and the (ridicuously expensive) sony vaio P

OLPC launched the netbook craze. Asus just tried to steal some thunder from OLPC by announcing a $199 laptop which finally was launched at $399 and which was about a million times crappier then the OLPC technologies of using low power, not polluting, being sunlight readable, using the cloud and a children friendly OS.

No, it didn't. The OLPC was a flop. The EEE was a huge hit. Take away the EEE and netbooks would never have taken off the way they did. Without the EEE, there would have never been an Archos 10.

No, it didn't. The OLPC was a flop. The EEE was a huge hit. Take away the EEE and netbooks would never have taken off the way they did. Without the EEE, there would have never been an Archos 10.

OLPC is not a flop, far from it. 1.2 million children in third world countries (over 10 thousand schools worldwide where every pupil has one) are using their OLPC XO-1 every day and it is making totally insanely awesome improvements in all of their lives even though very few of the teachers and public schools actually know best how to use this tool of using the Internet and laptops optimally in the education process yet. The politicians are all trying to get more funds to buy many many more of those OLPC laptops and OLPC is working as fast as they can to lower the price further towards $75 per laptop with the XO-2 model.

Eee was just a commercial product. OLPC is not intended to be a commercial product.

OLPC opened it up for the PC and laptop industry to look at their products as requring less power, less features, less graphics, less bloatware and in smaller sizes and lower weight. OLPC showed the industry that it was possible and that it was the way to go. In fact, the industry was forced to react thanks to OLPC, cause if they did not react in 2007, the whole world would already have been using non-profit $100 AMD Geode powered sunlight readable Linux laptops by now. Intel and Microsoft especially wouldn't have been too happy about that. So to stay in control, Intel was forced to make the Atom, netbooks and MIDs.

You said that the eee pc was "only a commercial" product, while the OLPC was non-commercial. Why then, according to you, did a non-commercial product start the craze for commercial netbooks...

Eee pc was what started it all - you know it but wont admit it.

OLPC was announced in January 2005, beta test models launched by the end 2006, launched in mass production by the end of 2007.

Eee pc was announced out of nowhere at Computex middle of 2007 for $199 and was not released before the end of 2007 at $399.

Eee didn't start a thing, other then perhaps Intel's attempt at controlling the worldwide laptop revolution which OLPC was forcing on the industry.

Perhaps you should look a bit further then gadgets that you can waste your money on in your local crapware store. OLPC is a University project, sold without profit to third world countries. Stop whining if you aren't targeted by OLPC to be the yuppy adult westerner to consume it.

Check out the Anandtech review of the NVIDIA Ion reference system. Yes dual-core Atom is faster than single-core, but are you really doing more CPU-intensive tasks? As he pointed out, it can run Photoshop faster than the single-core, but are you really going to run Photoshop often on a 1024x600 screen? In something like an Eee box it makes a little more sense as those are more likely to be used as an only computer, while netbooks don't really serve that need very well.

All of which doesn't mean I am not considering a Ion board for a carputer build.
