I've just lost everything because the 405 stopped recognising the 4gb card I'd been using prior to the 16gb I've been recording to this afternoon with no problems. Is there a way of removing and inserting sd cards that we have to follow other than 'safe to remove'? I mean does the archos have to be off before I insert a different card or reinsert the same one?
It went to recover mode and I ended up formatting the thing so is there anyway of recovering or reinstalling all the stuff that was on the unit (the music, videos and manual that were pre installed?). I haven't lost anything I put on the internal files as I have copies just have to put them back. Seems to be working ok but will not see the 4gb card even tho I've formatted it and it's recognised by the pc in a card reader. It was working fine?
Any ideas as I'm baffled. I can't claim the cards faulty as it works in pc and worked until it stopped in the archos!
Apologies if you read this in another post but wanted it seen for more answers!

Re: Had to reformatt and have lost all the stuff 405 shipped wit
Thanks - another forum suggested that the 605 covered the 405 605 and 705! That is what the manual covers so is logical. May just not bother as I now have a little extra space to play with. Still can't get it to see the 4 gb sd card. It worked fine for 4 days then just didn't see it and the whole thing crashed. Even formatting the card hasn't helped so I now have a card I can't use in the 405 and my pda can't see it but then it doesn't see sdhc cards anyway. Just confused as to why it worked and now it doesn't - on the 405 anyway. PC sees it!

Hi there. First time posting here, but interested in what you have written about the 4 gb SD card. I haven't had to reformat the Archos, but my 4gb SD card also refuses to be recognised anymore by my Archos 405. It read it before, when I had transferred a film onto it and other test clips of various durations, via the correct leads etc, but a few days later it did something rather strange.
I switched the Archos on, and a white "flash" appeared on the blank screen for about a second, and then the home screen appeared, but with an "eggtimer" over it. The eggtimer refused to disappear, even after several minutes, and only by holding down the "on"button for about 15 seconds would it allow the unit to be switched off.
I now get this white flash almost everytime I first switch on the Archos, and have to restart in the same way I have just described, then get the Archos Your Way screen for about 1o seconds, then the home screen with icons for videos, music, photos, etc!
Interestingly, the contents of the 4 GB SD card were "wiped away" and now the card refuses to work and will not be recognised in the player, even though I use the "safe to remove card" option everytime, and another 4gb SD card seems to be working perfectly. Anybody else had this happen? Hope this helps you a little too with the SD card mystery.

Did yours come from QVC? Wondering if it's a problem with those particular cards. I can use mine in my camera and put the camera one in the archos so I've not lost out. Hubby has also had the set from QVC but hasn't used the sd card yet.
Yesterday I found that the 16gb card I was using was showing as 5mb free on the card reader and when you added up the contents even on the archos but if you checked in the archos it showed as full and when you accessed on the pc thru the archos. I cleared the card and reformatted in the archos and all is now well. It may be that I was clearing files in the card reader and not the archos so it may have not seen the removals. It's all I can think of!
Interesting to know you have a problem too. If it was QVC I'll ring them and say we have a problem. They are usually very good but may want the whole thing back!
