Well, I've had my archos freeze on me a few times, though I'm not sure if this is hardware or software - but a quick reset fixes it. But it has been more frequent of late.

I can also confirm the "power light stays on after suspending" bug on my 4gb. Happens about a third of the time.
This happens to my 4GB as well, although not as frequently as it used to a few weeks ago. It appeared to occur mainly, but not exclusively, after using the web browser.

C'mon Archos, this must be a prime candidate for a fix.

I was "dj-ing" for my party last night with my 605 with the latest firmware, and I was adding songs to the playlist as I was playing music from it simultaneously. The 605 sometimes skipped a second or two when I was adding songs, and even reset on my 3 or 4 times! I was very pissed off that it cannot function properly as even a music player!

Don't know if this is a 2.1.04 bug or not, but after clearing the temp files / cache, apart from deleting the browser settings and favourites, the data vault files were wiped as well. :o :x

Chris B, it will as well as clearing Cache/History etc. remove all settings you put into any Widgets - so don't keep anything important in the notes, calendar, data vault etc.!

I'v got the same problem with the webbrowser with my 80gb 605 WiFi. The keyboard first becomes ridiculously slow and than the browser freezes. Only by holding down the power button for 15 sec I get reboot and start the device again.

Funny thing, More bugs are starting to show up now.

Power off, light to power button does not go off, screen black, try everything, like holding button down and or rapid quick push of power button, If i hold down for over 40 seconds , it then will either turn completely off or turn back on.

I checked my settings for power , standby and all are the same as when they came from the factory.

It seems to be getting worse, use to happen every so often, but now about everytime.

I am wondering if it is time to send back ?

While playing music, the screen turns off... ok that's normal, BUT when I try to skip a song, the screen (entire 605) takes around 5 seconds and many screen taps in order to respond.
I hate that beacuse I use it while driving my car.

Which version of the firmware should I use? 2.1.04 seems unacceptably buggy.

@rdp, well, 2.1.04 should theoretically be less buggy than previous versions... The bugs on these pages should be reproducable on other firmwares also.

Jack, I'm not experiencing suspend, power or crash problems with an earlier firmware. The only real bug I have is subtitle problems. I'm still on 2.0.10.

Upgrading to the latest 2.1.04 wouldn't I think at more bugs then the 2.0.10. If it should be adding more bugs for you then you can always downgrade back to 2.0.10. Only downgrading to a firmware below 2.0.10 is not possible.

What problems do you have with subs.

Subs will not play unless I put the *.avi and *.srt files on the same folder together with another movie, set play to random, start the other movie, advance to the end and let it roll over to my movie. I found this bizarre technique on this forum.

There are bugs in this thread, such as the suspend problem in the first post, that I do not experience.

That is strange I don't have any problems with srt I just put it in the same folder example.avi and example.srt and the video just starts playing with the subs. Only when I use my upnp server it won't play the subs. So when I want to play movies of my network I use the filebrowser of the archos to select the video.
BTW I don't experience the trouble with suspend, but I must admit I haven't really tried reproducing the problem on my archos 30Gb 605 with 2.1.04.
But like I said before you can always downgrade to your current firmware. So if you keep having the problems with the subs then try upgrading.

The sub problem may be unique to 2.0.10. I just haven't gotten around to upgrading.

I'll try the new one. Thanks for pointing out that I can downgrade back.

I really think to be honest with all of you.

I initially posted about the issues and problems I had with my unit. It has now failed with only 2 1/2 weeks of use.

I wonder how long before allot of these errors and glitches we all think are firmware. Are actually a fault chip going bad !

Because that seems to be what led to mine failing.

And Archos, they are not doing anything real to help with the loss of the screen saver cover or nothing.

The loss of my time of adding movies and music. The loss of my helmet cam video's used in / for racing. Now Loss of usage of product for a race.

I loose with time and money and I get notta from them.

I am gonna re-turn everything and find someone else to buy from.

I really think, many will follow suite when they get burned, when there unit fails or has all these glitches in such a short time.

Then fail or do the refurb or rma.

I have not seen such horrible customer surface and I am sorry I can not be more positive over the whole ordeal.

Just confirming the suspend mode lockup with my new 605 4G. It seems to happen about 1 in 3 times I try to suspend. But, I'm using 2.0.10. rather than the latest firmware, so it seems to already afflict the earlier firmware.

I did a test: After it recently locked up, I forced it off, rebooted again, and suspended again. I did this several times without doing anything else inbetween, and it repeatedly froze on suspend every time.

Then I tried connecting and disconnecting wifi between power up and suspend, but it had no effect, it still froze on suspend.

Finally, I connected wifi and browsed for a couple of minutes before suspending, and that did clear the problem at last, it suspended normally.

After that, if I powered up and immediately suspended again, I couldn't get it to freeze, even after several power up / suspend cycles.

I don't know if that proves anything. I would guess it's quite a low level problem. I haven't noticed a 605 hard drive version user complain of the problem, it seems to be limited to the 4G version.

It irritates me a lot, so i now switch off rather than suspend every time, it doesn't take much longer to restart anyway.

My bug:-

My Archos refuses to work before I reset each time ( using that small resel hole at the bottom of the device). For example when I take out my archos after a day or two and I try to charge it , only the green charge light remains solid . However If I reset the device using the bottom hole and connect the archos to a charger the Archos promptly turns on ( Mind you after resetting I can turn it on only using a USB cable or my battery dock. The power button on the top of the device will not be able to power on the device). Everything returns to normal. After finishing off with the charging If I turn my Archos off then I am back to sqaure one. i have to go thru the same ordeal of resetting the archos, connecting it with a usb cable to bring it back to life. What could be the problem. Any ideas ? My archos warranty has expired and now I am stuck !

Did this only happen since firmware upgrade? It's probably the freeze at shutdown bug. If the power light remains on after you've suspended the unit, the unit's crashed, and if left like this will probably drain the battery flat within a few hours. Hence not being able to turn it on without applying external USB power first. Try the advice given in your other post, shutdown (hold power button longer) rather than suspend (short press) and see if that sorts it.

If it's been going on since before firmware upgrade and getting gradually worse, it could be a failing battery that's not holding its charge between sessions.

No it happens in case of any shut down that is both suspend and complete power off. However if the unit is charging(via USB or DC-IN) and I do a complete shutdown, I am able to power on the unit using the power button. I use my Archos mainly with the DVR dock connected to my av reciever via the digital coaxial chord. So I used to switch the dock on which would power on the Archos automatically . However one fine day I tried to switch on the Archos using the Power Button and nothing happened . I thought maybe the unit was out of power and I promptly put the Archos on the dock and it did not turn on . However after a reset it turned itself on. From then thats how it has been like :( . I am not sure what version it was then . Cause I did a lot of R&D on that with firmwares , overnight charge, full reinitialize, format hd etc. Currently it is in 2.1.0.4
