Thanks! It was actually easier than I thought. Once the SDE is installed you have a boot loader that will allow the older firmware versions. Held the down volume when powering up to get into boot loader/recovery, format drive, copy old firmware, reboot and done.

I know it was posted in several of the firmware upgrade threads but my keywords keep failing me so if anyone would be willing to point the way I would be grateful ...

I would download it, and when it reboots to install it I would hold down the volume and boot into recovery mode, connect to USB and copy it off to my computer, then maybe think about applying it. I'll fire mine up in a while and see if I get a notice.
