The answer seems to be no. The gen 4 and 5 units had a media server feature which could be switched on under the wifi options menu. I've been unable to find such an option on my A7. Anybody else know if this feature has definitely been dropped for gen 6?

I'm using a 605 remote on my 7 so I would say yes. Everything works fine except the mouse pointer (i.e. in Opera) which is REALLY sluggish. I don't think the 7 has its own IR receiver though. The remote only works if you have a DVR dock.

It can be done. You would need to set the LCD to never shut off under power options and then go to the video recorder.
