Oh, I was wrong about the USB, it will not work with the 5. The ports on the bottom are totally different, sorry I was thinking of a regular USB to attach a dock, not the proprietary one. My apologies.

With no HD at home it seems that the reasons for me to upgrade are slicker wrap+UI and somewhat better performance.
The rest audio quality and storage size don't matter that much.

One month to warranty expiration, my 605 finally died.

While copying files from the 605 to my PC I hear a buzzzzzzing sound, getting louder and louder, when I notice it is my 605. It stopped in about 30 seconds, and the 605 hanged. Bah! I tried to wake it up, reset it, to no avail.

The "A-5" option insinuate that this is a grade A gadget... that's a promise Archos will find difficult to fulfill with "features" such as low-volume, weak battery, no apps, no fm remote, etc...

It depends on the file system, really.
Traditionally Archos are using the FAT32 file system for compatibility reasons - basically all common OS can mount and read from and write to this file system.

Something similar happened to me a few times lately.
A hard-reset fixed it.

The actual performance is up to a number of factors, and the CPU is only one of them.
IO operations on storage device (flash/hard drive) and network, RAM and BUS speed, quality of touch screen, and of course the software...

I believe that as far as user experience the iPod Touch is far better ...

I did not read the specs but I watch some reviews and demos on youtube.
It seems to respond the same way the 605 does... i.e. try to zoom and drag large photos is slow and not too responsive.
I wonder if its just the touch screen, or the CPU, or both.

Choppy video display is due to the device being unable to handle high bitrates, either in decryption or reading the video data from the storge (flash/network/hard drive).
This is typical to high/fast-action scenes where the video frames have a lot of differences between them and the following frames ...

If you don't want to hack your Archos then just go to http://archos.com and look at the bottom of the screen and it will show you the lastest firmware for your version. I'm surprised no one answered this quicker, sorry. :)
