While file sizes are "huge" (multiple gigabytes), you ought to see a Blu Ray rip (20G+!!).

I do rip the mpeg2 (single file) and then convert that to DivX or Xvid AVI at native screen resolution (if you compromise the audio... you can get things down to less than 700M each on a normal movie... plan ...

No offense, but where to do you think the Archos products are put together? AFAIK, they don't originate from France (which may have a lot to say about the quality issues with Archos).

I would wait for the P5 to become available. Cowon has its share of ups and downs product wise.

The P5 is a different class of machine... Archos tries to be everything. The P5 is a general PMP and possible Nav device. I don't think there is a record option apart from mic and radio on the P5.

O2 is a nice flash PMP with an SD slot. But nothing more. The Archos 5 has network, recording, etc.

O2 is a downgrade from the Cowon A3... an A3 would at least have recording capability.

Best thing about a Cowon product vs Archos is reliability. Their stuff is VERY durable and doesn't fail or lock ...

The saddles CAN differ based on device... well at least in the past...

Also, it's possible that a saddle could work across multiple devices. So... based on those two things, shipping the player specific saddle with the player itself must have made the most sense.

I wonder how the Cobert Report would look on it?

While I don't own an A3, I do own an A2. I also own a 504. I will say the quality of the A2 is much better. And from what I read in the forums (both sides), Cowon doesn't do as many weird (hangs) things as Archos. But YMMV.

Perhaps not the greatest news... BUT, if it's a battery problem and you can't get it replaced for free... the good news is unlike most Archos products, the 504 has a user replaceable battery. You can alway purchase one.

SSD drives? Not for awhile. I guess they could come out with the $1000+ Archos for the filthy rich... but my guess is that they won't.

The time is coming, but probably a year away from something affordable (which could that elusive x06 series... hmmm).

One of the weaknesses of Archos is that they tend to move forward and not look back... BUT now that they've got the non-replaceable battery, in a way, they can afford to look at their devices as being at least 3 year disposables.

I'd go pick up that other PMP... you know that sub $300 one with a 4.3 inch high res screen, WiFi, all codecs, etc. Come one... you KNOW the one I'm talking about.

Of course if you have the older x04, you might also have a bomb (an extra li-ion battery), just make sure the "bomb" is secured inside of an anti-bomb container (i.e. plastic bag).

What "others"? I think you may want to specify some examples. I suppose it might be interesting to list the number of PMPs that do WiFi and all of the codecs, etc. I mean, there's the Cowon Q5. What "others" were you thinking of?
