Tried it and after a bit of trouble (had to reset the unit to get it to power on again), everything is back up and running.

Ah, that's too bad. I guess they're using the same chipset in the 605 as in the 604 so the same limitations?

Kinda weird to have a 800x480 screen but only be able to play 720x576 (or 720x480) content.

Sorry if this has been covered before but I didn't see it answered in the FAQ nor could I find it in a search.

Anyway, is the maximum file resolution still limited to 720x576 as with the 604? Just curious as HR AVIs (960x544) are pretty common so it would be nice to be able to play them without ...

Thanks for all the info on the 605 so far. I've read through the thread but didn't notice a couple of things that I was interested in.

1. Does the 605 support subtitles (mainly I'm interested in SRT & IDX/SUB)?

2. Does the 605 support MKV (especially higher resolution ones like X264 ...

Like I mentioned in the other thread, the two big issues are:

1. MKV (720p/x264) support. Lots of material are floating around in this format.

2. Subtitle/closed captioning support (sub, srt, etc.). Very handy to have for foreign movies and when you want to watch something without sound.

Archos's bad pixel policy is that if there are less than 4 bad pixels, they won't replace your unit.

So they definitely knowingly sold units with bad pixels.

If they are protected videos, the Archos will not play them. Apple wants you to buy iPods to play their content. I never buy anything with uncracked DRM for this reason.

Amazon and newmp3technology.com both have them for $15 + shipping so it's a bit cheaper but still seems kinda pricey for a cable. I used to buy bulk data cables for a storage firm so I have an idea of how much cables cost wholesale.

Other than eBay, is there a good source for these AV cables? Archos is selling them for $30, which seems insane for a cable.

Nice reference guide. A couple of things to add...

No quarter-pixel and GMC support for AVI.

No support for QuickTime .MOV with Sorenson 3 codec. In fact, my 604 just reboots (!) whenever it encounters one.

Why not just rip to VOB and play those using the Cinema plugin? So no hassles with conversion, compression, audiosync, etc.

For those things that I want to compress, I tried CloneDVD Mobile but found the quality to be not so great so I ended switching to Handbrake/AutoGK. A bit more complex but ...

I've been using Handbrake for Windows a bit and it seems to produce pretty good results for H264 files. The lack of a proper autocrop is annoying but you can always set the crop manually.

After thinking about it some more, I think that I will go with the Docking Adapter solution since the ability to plug into AC is nice. I will just have to live with using the 604 as the charger though. Too bad the newmp3technology.com charger is $90 (with 2 batteries) and is still only USB. The ...

Just got my 604 and have already run down the battery twice. Charging via USB is a drag so I'm trying to figure out the best way to keep juiced up.

Should I purchase an external battery charger and extra batteries? Does anyone else besides newmp3technology.com make an external battery charger?
