Unlike the 101 which I though was complete crap, I kind of like my 70 (250 Gb).
It's not at the iPad level, but the screen is much better than on the 101 (better colors, better angles and it's actually usable as a touchscreen). Also the (smaller) resolution of the screen seems to be more adapted to ...

I actually returned mine today (the 8 Gb model) after testing it for about a week.
With the latest firmware and market installed, I wanted a sidekick device to playback videos, look at my mail and surf the web around my house.

Re: What should Archos do for Gen9/Gen10, write suggestions
A 101, but with real power and a real screen this time.
3G would be nice too.
I don't care if the price ends up being 2x more.

Re: I hate it
After owning several Archos devices, I promised myself never to buy one again for various reasons (shoddy support, flaky hardware, broken promises made by their marketing department). I needed something cheap that could play almost anything (nothing complex like say MKVs) without much fuss, and that ...

Re: joikuspot wifi problem
Just got a N95 8 Gb with Joikuspot and an unlimited data plan to have a portable 3G/WI-FI router and a backup solution to my main Internet access, why am I not surprised that my Archos 5 is the only device I got that doesn't support ad hoc networks.

I'm actually using a pair of Westone 3 and couldn't be happier.
Unlike the Shure's, it's a real 3-way system and built like a tank - important considering the price. Their special "forming" eartips really helps to make them conformable and isolating, this is important to me because I didn't ...

Re: The UE "volume law" : excuse for Archos 5 sound output?
My plan to improve volume is to just use a portable headphone amp. Im experimenting with a cheap one now, the Fiio e3 amp. Its the size of 2 AA batteries and outputs 70mW on 32 ohm earphones, which greatly improves the <10 mW archos 5 output. I'm using the somewhat famous FiiO E3, it works fine ...

The Archos is absolutely terrible at multi tasking, basically it can't!
I wouldnd call the ability to play music in the background whilst doing something else earth shattering. It should be able to do full multi tasking like have the browser open and be able to switch between settings and other ...

Re: why did you buy a archos 5?
To watch videos on a bigger screen and with less hassle than on my iPhone, and also to use (through the HDMI of the station) with my HD TV for playback. For video playback it's clearly the best pocket device I have seen, much better than the iPhone/iTouch.

Re: Music "hiccups" still occuring with new firmware (1.0.87)
Mine has "hiccups" sometimes when listening to music and surfing content heavy sites at the same, probably a sporadic memory, HD and/or CPU overloading issue.
The 1.0.87 helped, but it's still not perfect on that point.

Re: Brilliant review here!
It reads like a commercial brochure - e.g. no facts checking nor mentions of the limitations you can easily experienced when using the unit; it's not balanced at all and doesn't provide any value besides what people can get from Archos own web pages.

Re: website not working
Not a customer of this site myself, but it's another one where you need to "scroll around and zoom in/out all the time" just like the iPod Touch to use it. Perhaps Archos marketing team should adjust its RDF a bit, when comparing itself to the other guys.

You are new to Archos aren't you? Always take what their marketing department claim with huge amounts of salt.diabloNL wrote:I did try some and it really doesn't work very well or even at all. I think they shouldn't advertise it like that.
