Does my TV need to be on to record...
Newbie here, hi all.
Just bought the 604 WIFI.
Already learned a few things searching around this great forum.
Question is...does my TV need to be on to record.
I was recording fine, turned off the TV and now all I have is a dark screen.
This doesn't seem right that the TV needs to be on at all times.

Re: Does my TV need to be on to record...
The reason it needs to be on is you are using the tuner inside the television to provide video for the 604. Now, you can hook it up to something else like a cable box, vcr, etc that does not have a monitor. Its a little less electricity being used. The only way around this is if Archos put a tuner in the dock, but they are not going to do this as people get their source from so many places like satellite, Off Air reception, cable tv, etc.Deb wrote:Newbie here, hi all.

Archos is really hoping you will just go to their online store and purchase the shows. This is what the recording industry/movie industry wants you to do if they could push it though your country's legislation.
A year ago they were trying to push through a bill called "broadcast flag" which would identify copywrited material shown over your tv. If they did not want you to be able to record it, they would simply flip a switch, the tv show would be flagged and your 604 would not record it as they would have made Archos put in technology to recognize this flag and cut you off. Thank goodness that was shot down the SECOND time it was introduced. Don't worry though, they will keep trying.

This depends on what you are using for a source. Are you recording DVD's?Deb wrote:Wow, you're fast.
So are you saying instead of plugging into the front of the TV (like the diagram) to plug into the front of the DVD player, would this work?
If so, would the DVD player need to be on but not the TV?
Deb
If so, then if your dvd will operate with the screen off, then yes, you could do that.(I assume that your dvd is actually integrated into the tv set)
If you are tuned to a channel on your television, then the tv has to be on unless you are getting the source from a cable box or a vcr, then you can get it directly from there.

Ok, then I have the picture now. You could grab the output from your digital cable box and use that. If there is only one output (the one going to your tv/dvd) then you will either have to unplug the dvd, or get a "Y" cable to split it off so it will go to both devices at the same time. Then you would only have to have the cable box on when recording. The Archos will change the channel on the cable box and record at the specified time.Deb wrote:I think you're going to start going over my head.
I have a digital cable box that's in another room, it supplys signals to 4 TVs. It is only connected to the DVD player through a cable from another room.
Am I answering correctly?

Also, what kind of dock do you have. DVR Station, or travel adapter. If you have the DVR Station, you will be able to use the componet out jacks on the back of the cable box. Sometimes these cable boxes will output the signal out of composite, svideo, component, and hdmi all at the same time.suproach wrote:What type of feed goes from the central cable box to the TV? Is it Coaxial,Componnent,Composite or S-Video?

Other times they will have 2 sets of composite video/audiio out jacks so you can hook up 2 devices.
Don't forget she will have to choose what input on the 604 that will be used in the setup menu....I'm off for a bit.
Thanks Honey, I'm starting to understand, I will have to disconnect the MTS Digital Cable cord that's going to the DVD player that's then connected to the TV and only have it go to the TV.
I do not have the splitter cord you are referring to and to run an AV cable from another room from the Digital Cable box would be goofy.
And to Suproach, I do not even know how to answer that. All I know is I have MTS Cable that supplys the signal to 4 of our TVs but that box is in another room entirely.

Well, you would not put the splitter at the cable box. You already have it run all the way to the tv. You would split it off at the DVD area or TV.Deb wrote:Thanks Honey, I'm starting to understand, I will have to disconnect the MTS Digital Cable cord that's going to the DVD player that's then connected to the TV and only have it go to the TV.

See..clear as mud.
The only problem with the cable box being in the opposite room is it might be a little far away for the 604 infrared signal to change the channel for you. That will have to be done manually unless you have someway to repeat the IR into that room.

Honey, I think you're on to something LOL. That should work. The channel selections etc are all selected with the on screen menu through MTS cable.
I'm pretty sure I understand now. But for now without the Y thingy I'll have to leave the TV on rather that upset the DVD connected to the TV.
Thanks, Deb.
