how music files are organized in 605

Hi

One of the biggest reasons I am buying 605 is with the expectation that I can organize music in folders and sub-folders and play by browsing/selecting it. The music I listen doesn't suit well for artist/album classification.

I am assuming that, 605 will allow me to copy my folder tree structure from PC to the device directly and allow me to play whatever the track I want, by browing/selecting the specific track. This should work the same way, even when I don't hv ID3 tag filled for any of my mp3s. This is how the Gmini 120 I have is working. Also, I should be able to transfer all my music folder structure from 605 back to a PC later if I want to. Can some one pl comment if 605 works this way ?

I know some mp3 players in the market doesn't work this way. They only allow music files classification based on ID3 tag and its not known how they organize files in the device, and its difficult to copy the music from that gadget back to PC -if not impossible.

Pl clarify that 605 is as I am expecting it to be or not

If I drag-n-drop, to the 605 can I still search the unit via classifications, such as artist, genre, etc, if needed?

Does the ID3 tag of a tune have to have ALL fields filled in for it to show in the Music Library? I've put many tunes on my new 605, all have ID3 tags, but all have one or another field missing e.g. Album, date, and NONE of my tunes show in the Music Library. This is very frustrating - I have to use the BROWSE HARD DRIVE feature to select a tune....

I just wonder where I/the 605 is going wrong.

if you are using the archos as a mass storage device (as i am), you may want to set it to PC Hard Drive (auto ARClib). this will force the archos to update its library every time you unplug it from your USB connection. this way, you don't have to go through the hassle of manually updating your arclib every time you change files on there.

since i have just 12 gigs of total storage on mine, it only takes 10-15 seconds to update the library. i'm sure it'll take you longer with a 160gb, but i don't know how much longer.

Cheers, thanks for the tip, I'll do that. It's an 80GB so have been putting a lot on of all sorts.

Talking of the USB connection, one other problem I had, which I've sorted now, is with the USB flying lead straight out of the Archos into the Windows PC. The PC most times would show the Archos just as REMOVABLE DRIVE, rather than A605. If I clicked on REMOVABLE DRIVE it would say INSERT DRIVE and just sit there. However, if I connect the Archos to the PC via the USB socket on the DVR it's always OK. Perhaps a bad connection somewhere with the USB flying lead.... I just wonder if this is a common problem.

I've also had problems (a couple of times) with the Archos disconnecting, meaning it will suddenly disappear as a drive from My Computer.

It seems to have happened when transferring big files (1Gb or more)

I wonder if it's a dodgy lead. Any thoughts, anyone?
