wifi connection problem

Post by danozard »

just received my archos 605 wifi today and i am unable to connect to the wireless network at home. I have searched the forum for any FAQs related to my problem and i couldn't find one that provides a solution to the problem.

The 650 wifi can see the wireless router which is NETGEAR 54 Mbps Wireless router model WGR614 v6. The security settings are WEP (64 bit) with a passphrase required to access the network. The SSID is being broadcast and the authentication type is Automatic.

So i selected the above settings and even tried using lower case/ upper case letters for the passphrase and i'm having no luck at all. i have selected DHCP and it keeps coming up with 'Connection Failed'.

any ideas??

You could try entering the actual WEP Code instead of the passphrase? I believe you have the same router as me so it's easy to find on the router's settings page. Just a reminder :D it's 192.168.0.1 !

Networking has got to be just the worst thing to set up, it never goes smoothly! Setting up numerous Laptops, wireless cards, PDAs, DS's, Wii you name it...I've stayed up until the early hours trying to get em running!

hmm i'm getting somewhere but still a problem. i decided to manually assign the ip address and gateway settings etc and the 605 is now connected to the wifi. However when i try to "buy" the web browser plugin the system tells me i need to set my clock in order to play protected files. Same thing happens when i try to test the online update. I have already set the clock and it still comes up with the message about the clock. Do i need to install the web browser plugin first?? or should i be able to buy it through the 605 wifi without any problems??

I can't confirm but I believe someone on here had some problems when buying the plugins through the 605 itself. Probably the best way would be to buy it through your computer then put it on the 605 using USB, I believe there's better instructions when you purchase it. Have you upgraded your firmware?

yep the first thing i did was to upgrade the firware through the USB cable.
Bought the web plugin just a while ago and installed it.
now when i try to open the web , it tells me that "remote server could not be found".
Even when i'm connected to the wifi ( after manually assigning the ip address, for some reason it won't connect when DHCP is on) the mac address doesn't appear on the list of attached devices on the router so something is not right here.

looks like i'm close but no cigar!!!

If you leave your wifi open it eliminates many problems.

And introduces a whole load of new ones, like "Why is my speed so low now?", "How did my neighbour suddenly manage to fill his iPod up with leeched MP3s when his parents just cut off his broadband?", and "Why am I being sued for illegally downloading music when I haven't?"...

Unsecure wireless use in the UK leads to arrest

Post by Andy W »

In the UK you probably won't need to do that as he'll be arrested even before you've got into your router settings menu ...I wonder if this guy was spotted as acting strangely on our almost ubiquitous CCTV....Someone some where is watching our every move!

Yes but if i don't have a problem with it i don't see the legal implications for users.

just thought i'd give an update on this problem.
I was playing around with the router and decided to switch to mac address filtering and disabled the WEP security on the router. Finally i was able to surf the web on the 605. Still it's a bit annoying knowing that if the WEP security is enabled and i have to manually assign the IP, DNS server, gateway etc i just get 'remote server not found' in the web browser.

This is quite dissappointing for me considering that the same router has worked well with other gagdets such as laptops, PSP, Wii and DS.
Hopefully archos will take note of this and solve the problem with their next firmware update.

I'd suggest binning WEP anyway since it's been superceded by the more secure WPA system. I'm using WPA quite happily with my 605 (and dynamic IPs).

WiFi

Post by JETS »

FYI to new owners:

Just a quick note. I received my 605 160 gig Wifi and was able to finally connect to my Router only after I installed the 2 newer Firmwares that were available.

The original unit recognized the Wireless network but would not connect.

After the Firmware upgrade, everything was fine.

Off Subject...

Post by shodge »

Jets,

Sorry to be off subject but, does the 160GB have a kick stand on the back? There are no known pictures of the back of the unit [160GB 605H]. Can you post one?

Thanks,
-Stan

Hey!

Thanks for posting the photo's. Nice - I am envious. Waiting for Amazon (US). Good to see the stand is there. Looks like they changed the back plastic a little more than the original photo's. While the reviewers photo's did not show the back, they showed the sides near the back as all silver - like the 30GB. How does it feel in your hand? Last question, it the front marked 605H like the reviewed items?

Thansk fot you time.

605 WiFi

Post by JETS »

The 605 WiFi 160 gig is not marked 605H in North America. It is simply 605 WiFi 160 Gig.

In France (and maybe other places in Europe), It is marked 605F ("Flash" version) and 605S "Small Capacity" for the 30 gig version and 605H "High Capacity" for the 80 and 160 gig version.

Hope this helps.

Thanks

Sylvain
