Go figure...I got Dish installed a week ago, and since I already have a Panasonic DVR (it works seamlessly with the Dish receiver), I specifically requested the Dish222, instead of the Dish622. They are more or less the same machine, but the 222 obviously lacks the hard drive for recording.
AND NOW I hear that the DVR models will link to Archos players???? I called Dish to ask if I could swap receivers, and they said "Sure, with a $100 upgrade service fee." Wish I could go back in time a week. (Keep in mind the Dish DVR receivers also incur a $6 monthly DVR service fee.)
In the meantime, the only way I can move recordings off the Panasonic is buy burning them to DVD...not the end of the world, but I would have liked skipping that step.
Which reminds me: if you transfer recordings from the 622/722, by USB, directly to the Archos, they'll probably be MPEG2s, right? That creates a problem for those of us who don't want to keep full-size files on the Archos, but plan to compress to smaller sizes (i.e., XVid, H264, etc.). But then again, that's going to be true for any recording you do directly on the Archos...

They have screwed me several times already and I've only been with them for little over six months. I too wanted to download from the DVR and they told me I could until I got the unit and figured out I could NOT.
AFTER doing research I found out about the pocketdish. Just like you, I wish someone would have told me BEFORE I got the wrong DVR.
Mind you, I CAN download but I have the USB 1.1 which takes an hour for an hour of recording and they told me the same thing when I wanted to upgrade to the 622 for USB 2

See, they told me that IF I had gotten the right model in the beginning it wouldn't have cost me more anyway so it's not like it's more expensive, they're just being shit*y!

They don't mention what happens when the external device happens to be a portable video player...but since you can view the transferred videos on a PocketDish, it stands to reason the same videos should be viewable on the 605...? guiri, I definitely share your frustration...I was with Dish a year ago, and left a pretty disgusted customer (long, long story). Went with Mediacom for a year, and now back again with Dish. I would and depending on who you talk to, they may be very apprehensive about letting you leave.
When i cancelled my Vonage account, I had the girl in India almost begging me not to leave and I even turned down three months for free.
I finally had to tell her "Do NOT ask me a FOURTH time" as she was getting on my nerves.

On a related note, the more I think about it, the more it seems that recordings moved from the Dish DVR to any external device will have a DMR wrapping (like TIVO's?). Which makes it a tricky matter to view or play them when not pumping them back through the DVR receiver. As you note, the PocketDish decodes them, but will other Archos devices? Sorry if I'm just now understanding your comment!

I think Dish applies DRM on all their recordings cause they want to play nice with broadcasters who ask for there not to be an easy way to record and redistribute the digital feed on their satellite tv channels. So I think that since the first PocketDish, Archos has got a deal to support the Dish DRM in their firmware.
For the AV500, Archos didn't have the plug-ins support, which meant that normal AV500s didn't pay for the Mpeg2 and AC3 licence, thus it would have cost Archos plenty of money to release a new firmware adding Mpeg2/AC3 and they would have had no way to sell that firmware since one firmware fits all AV500s. That's why they needed to have a sepparate product as the PocketDish with basically included the Mpeg2/AC3 licences and also was loaded with the special Dish DRM compatibillity and other content synchronisation firmware features.
Now that Mpeg2/AC3 can come with a plug-in, I think it would only make sence to make the whole Gen5 compatible through firmware. Although Dish HD resolution recordings may or may not work natively, since those HD videos might be Mpeg4 or Mpeg2 at 1080i60, maybe that the Archos Gen5 only will support 720p30, thus I don't know if any Dish HD content is within that resolution.

When you hook any USB drive to a Dish 622/722 with the USB ports activated, I believe it erases all data on it and reformats it, and it is only usable with the Dish receivers on your account. You probably couldn't even get the files to play on the archos screen, only on your TV that is hooked to the 622/722. There will have to be some special recognition of the 605 in order to use it as a Pocketdish.
