New Tablet?!? OMG
New Tablet?!? OMG
I just looked on the Archos site.. and sadly.. they are out of stock again on the archos 43...
BUT:
Then, what do I see? An archos 48? 4.8" screen and 500gb (hard drive, no doubt) capacity.. replacing the gen5 archos altogether!!! WOW... This really puts companies like Creative Labs behind the 8-ball!!! I think I would have bought the 48 had it been out at the same time as the 43.. This is awesome. Samsung will have to really find a away to beat that pricing.. $299 IMO, this undercuts the 70 (250gb) tablet.. perhaps they will be upgrading the entire line... 43's go from 16 to 32... 70s go from 8 to 32 & 500gb (hard drive).
BTW.. Moderators (charbax) need to make an Archos 48 thread now, hehe..

I'm not seeing it (checked Canada, USA, and France) - are you sure what you saw isn't the Gen7 Archos 48 which, to my understanding, is the Archos 5IT minus the GPS?

Weird! I couldn't find it for looking... At any rate, I'm now positive that it's the Gen7 non-GPS version of the 5. The outer case, screen resolution and CPU are all identical in comparison to the Archos 5. The 43IT has higher spec'd screen resolution and CPU and a redesigned outer case. The Archos 48 is also running Donut (Android 1.6) and Archos notes:
The quote is from the "Full Specs" tab on the page linked to in the post above. In its normal use mode, the ARCHOS 5 being a miniaturized Personal Computer:
Program language C - requires special developer-edition firmware15

bahaha some of the pics still say Archos 5 internet tablet
Re: New Tablet?!? OMG
So, maybe the hopes of this tablet being a 43 with a 500gb hard drive are not exactly what's delivered-- though, I'm not understanding why this is a android 1.6 device.. if it has a cortex a8 @ 800mhz and 430mhz dsp.. couldn't it do 1080p video (decoding if it were on a higher android version) and froyo os or not? These are the capabilities I would associate with a gen8 tablet.. not 7 or 5.

Re: New Tablet?!? OMG
Heh, heh - a lot of Archos5IT owners are asking the same question about the A5's specs and upgrading the FW on it to Froyo or beyond (i.e., WHY isn't Archos updating it, given that the technical specs will support newer builds of Android... Answer, of course , is that they want go sell A5IT owners Gen8 tablets).

I checked it out, it runs 1.6 and no promise of an upgrade...
Re: New Tablet?!? OMG
If they had updated the 5 with a 1ghz or faster processor, android 2.2 or later, and kept GPS in it, I might be interested. Anything running 1.6 with no promise of upgrade is "old tech". Archos should be ashamed.

What I don't understand is why isn't the 48 listed in the gallery area/ main page with all the internet tablets. You can only view the 48 through the Archos store.
