Archos 32 freezes

I bought this Archos 32 on Sunday 12/5 and today is Wed 12/8 and my A32 has froozen twice.
Both times I moved to my bedroom, a short distance away (from DSL) from my living-room (in an apartment).
It didn't freeze at all on Sunday or Monday.
Is this a normal occurance?
Don't it mean that this A32 is defective? I hope not because I bought it as a present for my grandson and would hate to have to return it (to Sears).

Sorry, but I cannot find anything about turning WiFi ON/OFF in the manual. I do see the following:

This very useful widget allows you to easily shut on/off modules of the ARCHOS that take up power. You can thus extend the usable battery charge of your device. From the left to right.

WiFi: Turn on/off the WiFi module.
Bluetooth: Turn on/off the Bluetooth® module (only the ARCHOS 32).
Sync: Shut off the synchronizing that often goes out to the web to synchronize application data.
Brightness: Allows three levels of screen brightness."

What do they mean by saying "this very useful widget?" I do not see any widger! What is a widger? Is that a program on my A32 or is it something I need to download, etc. (Please, remember, I am new to all of this and this is a gift for my grandson when I can (finally) get it set-up.)

If I tap the WiFi icon at top of Homepage, nothing happens. And, if it was OFF, I wouldn't see the WiFi icon at the top in order to turn it on.
Must I always go to Settings/WiFi in order to turn WiFi ON/OFF, or is there some way to do this via the Homepage. I do not see anything else at top of the Homepage other than the (green) battery icon.

Is there any way to make the (Power) widget smaller, or can it fit in the small black 'line' at top of the A32?

Not that I know of. I have mine on another page than the home page. With 5 pages to choose from I keep games on one, e-reader apps on another, and widgets for music, video, photos, and power intermixed among the icons. Some apps give you a size choice for their widgets, but none for putting them along the top line.

Archos has mentioned (in the 43 forum) 2 problems associated with WiFi. One is that it has difficulty with channels above 11. The second is that it has problems with a certain form of encryption used on modems (DSL and others). They are aware of both problems. One has already been fixed internally. The other they are consulting with their chip manufacturer about. A firmware update will eventually come to resolve them.

Your freezing 32 may be due to either one of the above problems. I suggest turning WiFi OFF to see if the problem occurs again. You should know that if your grandson doesn't live with you, he may never experience any of the problems you are.

Many thanks. How would I move that "Power" panel from the Home page to the "Application Page" where all the applications are shown (the one at bottome of screen with the 4x4 boxes)? Or would that also transferred in the same (fairly large) size that it is already?
Or would it be better to create a new folder (how to do that?) and put the "Power" panel in there by iteself (if yes, how to do that)?

Where do you have it and how did you do it?

The manual doesn't mention anything about being able add folders on the Home Screen.

Thank you, but I really directed my question to 4DThinker, so he could tell me how he did it on his A32.

Swipe to the page you want the power widget on.
Press and hold any clear spot on the screen.
A pop-up window appears: "Add to Home screen", with options Shortcuts, Widgets, Folders, Wallpapers.
Tap on Widgets.
A new window appears: "Choose widget", with a sliding list of the available widgets below it.
Slide the list up until you see Power Control. Tap it.
The Power control widget should now appear on that screen, close to where you had pressed it to begin with. The toggles are, left to right: Wifi, Bluetooth, Tethering, Syncing, and screen brightness.

If the power widget isn't where you want it, then press and hold on it for a second or two. It will "jump loose" and you can slide it to a new position. If you slide to the edge of the screen, the screen page will change and this is how you move anything from page to page. While you are sliding something a trash can appears bottom edge of the screen. Slide and drop item to the trash can to "delete it" from that page. This doesn't delete anything permantly.

I keep my power widget on screen to the left of the home screen, and at the top.

The Android User Guide is a huge (354 page) file. It won't appear until the browser has downloaded it all. If you have a slow internet connection it may seem like forever. Be patient on that empty page and it will eventually appear. I'll warn you though that there is quite a bit of that user guide that is intended for android phones, and doesn't apply to the 32.

I haven't had any freezes on my 32, but the moment I got it I replaced the default Archos launcher with Launcher Pro from the Market and I kill non-active apps just about every time I quit one with Advanced Task Killer, which takes at max 3 seconds. The difference in speed is easily noticed.

If you want to disable wi-fi and bluetooth without a widget the easiest thing to do is hold the power button down and enable Airplane Mode when prompted.
