would this be a quicker way of copying my dvds to the 704.
Might not work, most DVDs are copy protected.
Using DVD Shrink removes the copy protection.

Xilisoft dvd ripper is a nice easy dvd ripper to use and converts dvd into all of the archos formats AVI, MPEG4, WMV, VOB e.t.c

exactly the same questions!

Post by Aeroshmuppet »

Hi you both, Neil and Mark
I'm Juliana, and I bought my 704wifi about a month ago, plus an extra batery. Still hyper!
I entered the site as I also had the same doubts Neil had. Your chat was more than helpful.
Pity I'm in Argentina, (bought the archos in the states, through a friend of mine). So, buying any sort of accesory or plug ins or stuff is a challenge, not only economically speaking but also I have the shipping problem.
I'll go check the cinema-plug in (It ask me twice with different files to get it). And I don't remember if this was answered, but how frequently should I update the firmware from the archos.com?
WIFI is ok, a bit boring at the beginning only to write an email on gmail... and some sites I cannot visit due to the 704 not supporting java... too bad. Also, It would be nice, for the sake of feeling absolutely spoilt (jajajaja), to be able to play some one-click (or styli) games or such.
But above all, I feel incredibly happy with it! My lunch hour has improved a 100%! jajajaj
Cheers from the southern end of the world!

hello Juliana

I'm well happy with my 704, got a leather holder and spare battery on the way from Ebay , I've got the cimena plug in and podcast plug in too, cost me £28 from archos and now it will play all my ipod films files and ipod mp3 fine, the wifi works great.

Always wanted a archos but the price was abit high ,so when I saw it was half price at £164 , I got one :D

I've downloaded dvd shrink that mark posted up and will be having aplay with the software this weekend

keep on the good fight for the 704

Bear in mind that Xilisoft dvd ripper will probably only be a trail version so it will either only do the first 5 minutes of a file or require you to purchase it after so many days of free use.

Juliana the plug in is so easy, have you registration your machine at the archos website yet, do that then just pay for the plug ins over the web mate link below
http://www.archos.com/products/video/ar ... al&lang=en

you just download the file and copy and paste it into your 704 .
all it is, is a key file to unlock the program which is in your machine already. :D

neil.. do you have ebay in your part of the world then :?:

You need to ouput the file as one chunk.
Goto Edit-Preferences,select the Output files tab and un-tick the box that says "Split VOB files into 1GB size chunks" this will cause it to output just one VOB file.
You still need to make sure that one file is less than 4GB thought,so again in the Edit-Preferences select the Preferences tab and set a Custom size of 4096MB,every time you rip a DVD use your custom compression setting and you will always give you a VOB under 4GB.
Obviously the longer the film the more it will "shrink" it to fit into the 4GB setting but you can still go down to about 60% compression and it will be okay.
Out of the 4-5 files this produces you just need the one that will be the biggest,it will be called something like VTS_0_01,you can delete the rest of the stuff as it isn't needed.
Rename the VTS_0_01 file or whatever it is called to the name oif the film and copy it over to the Archos.

No it wont',the limit for VOB files with the FAT32 file system the 704 uses is 4GB.
If I remember you cant even copy it over,it will come up with a message saying the disc is full if you try.

I shouldn't see why not but the 704 isn't that portable as it is  and those speakers would need to be powered as well.

If you want a good ripper, one that will let you control the video size and file size, look into DVD Fab Platinum (http://www.dvdfab.com) and get the Platinum version. More than worth the $10.

OR

Download the DVDFab Platinum for free, and reinstall it once every 30 days when the trial runs out. Once you install it, you can experiment with the settings until you find the one that works the best, and then save it as a default.

I have ripped down over 60 DVDs and have loved it. a 2 hour movie will take roughly 45 minutes to process (P4, 3.8ghz, 3gb ram) and the quality is great. Oh, and you dont have to get the plugins, since you can save it as almost any format you want to...

Just my $.02
