Serious Threat from Toshiba...

Post by philthy_ritch »

With a tablet market dominated by the svelte iPad 2, a device with a "chunky design" isn't bound to Thrive. According to Notebook Italia, Toshiba's expected to announce a new ultra-thin tablet at IFA this week, swapping full-size USB and HDMI ports for micro-USB, micro HDMI, and microSD slots in order to shave off a few millimeters from last year's model, leaving the new device with a sleeker, much more appealing design. The rumored slate is expected to ship with a TI OMAP4460 dual-core 1.5GHz processor, an edge-to-edge screen, and a brushed-metal housing. Other specs, including Android version and screen size are a bit thin at this point, but we should have only a few more days to wait before Toshiba's new tab makes its glorious IFA debut in Berlin.

Edge-to-edge screens are a bad idea for tablets. You need some bezel room to rest your thumbs, or else people will be pressing things on accident.

If it was a smaller tablet/media player like a 4 or 5 inch device, edge-to-edge would be nice, but any bigger sized tablet like these I agree with Harfainx.

Well does the entire display have to be active is there a way to leave a perimeter of the display dead and only used for viewing.

That would be something that Toshiba would have to setup on their own. I'm sure there is an app out there somewhere to only utilize parts of the screen, but I doubt that it would work with everything and not just a select few activities.

It would likely have to be a proprietary function of the tablet to give a "soft-bezel" or something like that.

I like the idea of the tablet, but honestly I would like at least a small bezel around the edges. I know Google is now saying that the OMAP4460 is the default chip for ICS, so of course now everyone is going to start using them. We should be getting some pretty slick games for these OMAP4460-based systems pretty soon here.

Micro bezel is one thing that might lead me astray from Archos. I don't use thumbs, even for my heavy boat anchor of a 10in sinotab - it's just the first thing that comes to mind if a big bezel is facing you. The big wings on an a70 should not and need not be touched by thumbs. Even clean hands have oil and shedding skin that will be forced in the speaker holes. Last year I said:

You're kidding right? There are several threats to archos. Have you seen Samsung 's recent announcements? It may not be the same category but it makes competing very tough. Sony is coming out with their tablets which me as a Sony ps3 fan would be very interested in. Not to mention Amazon too. I seriously doubt my next tablet will be made by Archos but who knows?
