That is good that this works for you. My questions were not based on your phone but rather the samsung intercept. I have yet to hear from an actual owner of the virgin mobile version of my phone that has made this work. Perhaps with the coming upgrade to 2.2 I will find success.

Are you doing this on purpose? Did you not read my post above where I mentioned that I learned about this while reading Skuditta post on his VM Intercept he got working with this? I even gave you the link to his post......Ah man...Stop please. And now I'm done!

I would also note that technical advice is best when it comes from experience rather than what one wants to be true because they saw it on youtube. While the possibility that I was wrong exists, my EXPERIENCE tells me otherwise.

Ok I have to say sorry. I did mix Optimus V and Intercept stuff. You're right ...Intercept can not Hotspot Tether on 2.1. No Android phone can do so. Unless you use the AdHoc Apps. Optimus V is 2.2 Hotspot is only available as builtin on 2.2 Android.
Now your options are:
1. As, Skuditta to upgrade to Froyo sprint 2.2......Then you can use QuickSettings App. Skudita is using this Rom on Virgin M. Intercept
2. Use Barnacle wifi on current stock Rom 2.1. But you willl need to root both your Intercept and Archos.

Again I'm sorry for the mix up. Kept thinking VM optimus V and did not notice Skudita had upgraded his Intercept to froyo and then use QuickSettings. My apologies.

I hope you all got it earlier, the price has gone to $200.
Also the 3G problems are solved in most areas, it was network related all along and it got fixed area by area.
Speculation has been that Sprint/VM were overwhelmed by the number of new subscribers and some serious reallocation had to be made on their network.
Now lets see if the plan holds.

Have to say a me too, thanks to the OP for starting this thread which got me to reconsider a cell phone esp with the plan options.

I ended up buying one on Saturday @ Target for $149.99 & $25 card to evaluate it. So far, so good. Pretty snappy for an ARM11 based device. Leaving bog standard stock ATM, since while it does have many useful non-phone features, I'm getting pretty crappy data(3G) here as in up until this morning in areas at home and nearby at various times of day I'd only get 120kbps up/down. This morning in an entirely different part of the house I managed 220kbps down and 270kbps up... kind of pokey, plus I get crazy signal strength variation but I still haven't figure out yet if it's just because of the way that I'm holding the phone, cell tower location and obstructions, etc. It'll be interesting to see how it does once the trees are leafed out -> even more potential interference.

I haven't bother to try tethering yet either, given my poor data rates. GPS works pretty well though, or as well as to be expected.

BTW: beermebeerme, in order for WiFi to actually funtion the device MUST have a transmitter as well as a receiver as it can't magically tell a site to start sending data w/o a connection...

The wifi hotspot works great for me, I had a 4 hour power outage in my local area today.
Also I guess the 3G is very much dependent on the area you are in, I have a pretty constant 900 down 500 up.
I really came in handy today, for just browsing with the laptop.
As soon as I had wired broadband back off came the hotspot.

The good thing of getting it from Target is you can return it if it does not work for you. I got mine from a craigslist poster but it was brand new in the box. The first day I was getting 500 kbps in the day. But @ night I got 2000 kpbs. The next day we had that big outage. One it was fixed I can only max 1300. Most time I willl get 600 kbps. I'm still wondering if I should keep it. The phone is great it's just the speeed is way down from my Straight Talk E71 on ATT network which was consistently 2000. But then that's a symbian phone and it's much higher priced. Also the monthly plan is $20 more. All in all I may just keep this one.

The real issue is whether or not it is just a hook in price on the plan.

Plans: True, but if their 3G speeds are still crap they won't be seeing another dime from me...

I'd still likely end up keeping it for the GPS/iffy camera/market access. I think that the GPS almost by itself would be worth it to me given that I HAD been looking at bluetooth GPS/data logger dongles which were listing for close to $100. I also note that it has a magnetometer as well, which I'm sure those GPS dongles would've been missing(true of limited value but...).

Also kind of funny how their fw also seems to report thermal values correctly, i.e. CPU & batt temps. I've yet to see a tablet that reports those as a non-fixed value in fw.

At $200 though, I would've just skipped this as I don't need a cellphone often, or even 3G even if it ran at useful speeds, but an emergency phone is handy to have for those times when you're relatively in the middle of nowhere could be helpful enough to be worthwhile.

BTW: someone on another forum brought up VM canada. Check out all the phones that they have access to up there, virginmobile.ca, even iPhones ffs! Their plans aren't as good as beyondtalk though... but still some nice/better droids in there, but too many Samsungs...

Yes, but it is really the same situation as here, Virgin Mobile is just a cover name for the real owner.
Here it's really Sprint of cause, and in Canada it is Bell. so Bell will give them whatever they feel like.
So the name Virgin Mobile means nothing in North America, other than a prepaid name owned by someone else.

I'm currently running an HTC Thunderbolt and I've already got a built-in hotspot button. If this app worked with my phone, would turning on this app's hotspot button just turn on my onboard hotspot or somehow stream the data from the phone plan to my devices. How many devices will it let you hook up at a time?

I use my VM Intercept as a wifi hotspot all the time and have for months, as a matter of fact I am posting this while using it. Sorry but you are just wrong, just because you couldnt figure out how to do it doesnt mean it wont do it. Now that 2.2 has been released I updated and permenently rooted but while I was on 2.1 i used a temp root app called z4root and a wifi app called Barnacle from the market. It also does USB tethering with apps like PDanet and EasyTether both of which DO NOT require root. But you will need root to use the wifi apps like Barnacle and Wifi Tether. I even found one that creates an AP or infrastructure network hotspot instead of the usual ad-hoc network.

The funniest part was when someone said it could only recieve wifi but not send it out? lol Sorry guys but it works and it works very well, which is good for me because the only other internet options way out here is dialup

USB tethering is not the same thing as WiFi tethering

PDANet does not connect two Android-based devices, but it will work Android to Windows (or Mac I believe). I don't know about EasyTether, as I've never used it.

Using thu intercept toget on wifi is different than using it as a wifi portal for an other appliance.. I was not willing to root my device and made it clear. The steps that were laid out o on this board did not include root any way. Hats off to your advanced skills but I stand by my posts.

As an aside, VM is wholly owned by Sprint. That is not to say they may not enter into agreements with ATT Canada.

Sorry maybe I should have been clearer? I am on a laptop right now that is tethered to my Intercept via wifi. Thats what I meant when I said that I was using wifi to post right now. I can also connect my PS3 and various other devices to it. Works with other androids too. That is wifi tethering.

@beermebeerme, I guess what you should really be saying is that Virgin Mobile does not support wifi tethering on the Intercept, it has nothing to do with the phone not being capable because it does the job nicely. Funny part is that my laptop browses much faster than the phone does on the same connection. But yes, to be fair I did have to root to get the wifi tethering apps to work and I can understand where people would hesitate but this isnt their phone, its mine. Would you buy a computer that wouldnt give you admin rights? I wouldnt and thats pretty much what rooting does.

Fair point and you are correct about my lack of skills. I went the easy road and bought the optimus for $149. Isold my intercept for$115. Sure im out a few bucks but i didnt have to sweat the root due t my aforementioned skill set. I rely on folks like you to take the risks. I mean it when i say thank you.

I got mine for $70 pretty good deal, runs great on stock froyo. wish my 43it had such a responsive screen dammit.
