In your "About Device" what version of firmware are you on? The Power Management is only available in Firmware 2.0.71 and newer.

Hi thanks for the response. Not sure what I was on but have just updated and now on 2.1.8 so Power Management has now appeared. Can anyone tell me what the differences are between the 3 choices, Optimal, Overdrive and Powersave please?

optimal = best battery life worst performance
normal = 800Mhz CPU speed stock standard
overdrive = overclock to 1Ghz, faster but chews battery quicker

Personally I'm on overdrive and consistently getting 5+ hours out of it (mostly browsing) so I'm happy to sacrifice some battery life for more snappiness. I know its only around 18 months old but that A8 cortex is starting to show its age (ditto with the 1st gen snapdragon in my nexus one), the mobile hardware market is moving at such an amazing pace.

Those aren't the options I see using latest firmware and that isn't the meaning of optimal in the english language I know. Instead of normal there is powersave, and optimal surely must be in between 800-1000. Optimal means ideal balance of factors, not one extreme (and it is inbetween the others on the menu).

Sorry typed above too quick got the categories mixed up.
Not going to go into semantics, just telling the OP what the options mean in the OS.

Hey noob here, just ordered my archos 70 250gb. Have a few questions that i would love to have answered :)

1) Can it really play avi, mkv etc out of box? (On the website it says a plugin needs to be downloaded, if there is a plugin, any kind soul to teach me how to get it on my archos?)

2) Do the subtitles work? ordinary .srt files. Do they work with all videos? (avi, etc)

3) What's appslib? and what's the difference with the google/android marketplace?

4) Can we get the android marketplace on it? (and how-to, just a link to a working guide would be fine, i can follow instructions :)

Thats all, i hope i get some constructive answers! Thanks a bunch!

Hi

Bought my archos 70 on Thursday. Just getting the hang of it.

I've seen some mention here about ADW launcher and Launcher Pro. Can someone give me a brief description of how those are better than the stock launcher?

Also, I've noticed that when I copy mp3 files to the sd card it won't play them directly. I have to load them into a playlist first. Is this normal?

Lastly, I tried installing the SlideIt keyboard demo version from the android market, but it doesn't appear to be any different than the stock keyboard. No sliding, no nothing. I selected it and deselected it a couple of times in settings, and rebooted, but nothing appears to be different.

I apologize if I've overlooked a better thread with answers to these questions.

Alright, I figured out the SlideIt problem. I hadn't held down inside text box yet and selected it over android keyboard.

Scratch that one off the list!

OK. next question. when I try to use certain apps in landscaoe mode, the soft keys get in the way of whatever is on that side of the screen. is the only solution to keep rotating the screen, or is there some other way?

for instance, slideit keyboard is cutoff on the left side in landscape mode.

Hi Guys,

I'm expecting delivery of my 70 250gb model this week, and was wondering what are the first updates/upgrades/downloads etc. I should have?

Will my model come with the latest version of Android, or are they still shipping them with 2.1?

If there was a list of 'must-haves' for the 70, could someone provide one or link me to one?

Thanks in advance,

Hi guys,

just received my Archos 70 today.
I have been around the forum for about 2 months now but mostly in the Archos 7 HT V1 section.
Had an interesting time in evaluating the custom ROMs there.

But somehow I felt there must be more. So I watched a few videos on the IT - same size factor and was amazed by the performance. Today it arrived and I am very enthusiastic to get everything running at a smashing speed (compared with the home tablet).
Going to sell the HT now to get some money back.

cheers

Hello, I found this information to get rid of the soft buttons while gaming. It works great and really makes games shine on my a70! This method has been around but I feel many still do not know about it. Sounds complicated but as you follow the steps and begin to understand what your doing its really easy, I have done this mod to all of my games.

Here's the link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=890199

Instructions:
1) Download the .zip, extract APK Edit.exe and run it.
2) Immediately when you run APK Edit, an Open window will come up. Select the .apk you want to edit. The .apk should open in the program.
3) Click on the details tab. Towards the bottom there will be a link called "browse" click it and then Scroll down the box and right click on AndroidManifest.xml and open it with your favorite text editor.
4) Add the following line to the list of uses-permission entries:
<uses-permission android:name="archos.permission.FULLSCREEN.FULL" />
5) Save the xml file after editing. Click "Apply" in APK Edit and the changes will be saved in the apk file. A backup will also be saved in case something was edited incorrectly. Click OK to close the confirmation window and close the program.

That's all there is too it. I didn't need to resign the apk or anything. Just drag it back onto your Archos 70, uninstall whatever game it is and reinstalled it from the new .apk. It keeps the game data and the game runs in fullscreen with no menu buttons.

I just did a factory reset and now I have no applib folder or when I downloaded an app it says its downloaded but no shortcut or isn't in my applications. Please help. I had this working a few days ago but couldn't delete things to give me more space so I wanted to start over. I guess that was a big mistake. Please help as I am a newbie.
