What do you use to get tunes onto your device?

Hi,

Currently I use Windows Media player 11 or iTunes to get music on my 605, however one of the annoying things is that iTunes renames some tracks or folders, and i have not found a way around this up to now.

I import my CD's using either of the above, then drag and drop the content onto my 605. The reason I resort to WMP11 or iTunes is to get the album art.

Does anyone know of any better ways to achieve the same result??

You should try MediaMonkey. It is free, very very good & easy to use. It works very well with the 605 (as you can read in many other threads/posts). It is especially very good in re-tagging, and in finding that album-art that you were looking for.

Tag&Rename for organizing and album art. I just use drag and drop with file explorer to put files on device, Tag&Rename will do it but I like doing it myself.

Hi All,

Thanks for the advice so far, I have just downloaded Media Monkey the free version, is there anyway I can get it to search for all the missing album art in one go, or to rename the tracks that iTunes has renamed without doing them one by one, as I have about 40gb's of music to do!

I don't think MediaMonkey will automatically do all the album art in one go, but search the mediamonkey forums for a script - I know there is one, I've used it in the past - that automatically searches for ALL missing album art at once.

Media Monkey seems to have done the job, but I want to get all the album art in one go, so I will have to look for that script.......

I rip my music using MediaMonkey, then drag and drop with the 605 in PC Hard Drive mode. I am not overly bothered about album art, so to be honest Im not even sure if it does this or not as I hardly notice it!

Do any of these applications allow a selection from a large audio collection to be synced with a large (but not _as_ large, if you see what I mean) Archos unit, whilst maintaining the directory structure? Or otherwise maintaining organization in a very large collection?

I have always just used folder structure to manage my files, because I just can't think of any tag-based system that will handle a collection of 10,000+ very disparate items.

I tried WinAmp, but when it synced to the Archos it could only organize the folders like

/Music/genre/album/artist

or

/Mustic/album/composer/genre

or whatever.

Since the Archos only recognizes album, artist, and title as organizing tags (so far as I can tell), there's no way to organize a really huge collection on an Archos _except_ by folder structure. But WinAmp (and others, so far as I can tell) flatten out the folder structure completely.

Is there a simple solution to this problem?

It's not a huge problem, because I can just do a plain copy. But what _is_ nice about WinAmp et. al. is the ability to select files for synching by search criteria. This is a rather fiddly to do with command-line tools, which is what I would normally use.

any combination of artist, album, title, genre, and year should work on the archos. Though I don't really know, to me /Music/artist/album/title seems the best and most logical but that's mainly because I decide what band I feel like listening to before what song.

That isn't really what I was getting at, to be honest. With 10,000+ items in your collection, and assuming an average of 10 tracks per album and (say) an average of three albums per artist, you still end up with about ~300 artists in the top-level list. That's a heck of a list to navigate on a device without a keyboard or mouse.

That isn't a fault of the particular organization, but simply the fact that no 2-level heirarchy is really going to work with a huge collection.

It's no problem with my own folder structure; it's just that I can't help a nagging feeling that there's an elegant way to resolve this situation, if only I knew what it was.
