Clearing items off the screen

I'm a bumbling new user, and have several questions. To start with, though, can someone tell me how to delete duplicates from the home screen? I somehow managed to get the calculator and virus protection notice up twice, and haven't been able to figure out how to make the duplicates go away.

Touch and hold down the finger on the icons, then move them to the upper edge of the screen where an [X] sign appears.
