Firmware 7ob IT : be very carreful !!!

Post by BenMars »

Do not try to install the firmware 3.2.77 (Honeycomb - Android 3.2) on a 7ob IT with Android 2.2 Froyo !!!
http://www.archos.com/support/support_t ... s_fwm.html

The tablet will be dead ! Several French users have lost their tablet like that (tablet bricked).

Install the firmware 2.4.81 (Android 2.2) on a 7ob IT with Android 2.2.
Install new firmware 3.2.77 (Android 3.2) on a 7ob IT with Android 3.2.

The models seem to be differents even if they have the same name.

The 2.2 tablet - Gen 8 - is received when you by a 7o IT.
The 3.2 tablet - Gen 9 - when you buy a 7ob IT (less expensive !).

Just to point one thing out - when you buy in a physical shop, on the box of 70b IT froyo version you see froyo launcher, on the box of 70b IT honeycomb version you see the honeycomb launcher. (So far) you won't be able to put Honeycomb firmware on a froyo version.

What I guess : Archos had built several 70b IT devices when Google has refused the agreement.
Then, they had to modify the devices so Google gave the agreement and Archos now begins to produce them with Android 3.2.
The early devices are sold as 7o IT with Android 2.2 and AppsLib instead destroy them or throw them. No agreement and not compatible with the 3.2 firmware allowed by Google.
The reason I imagine: Archos need at least 2 months to produce the devices. The firmware is finished at the last moment and they have the Google allowance just a few days before the scheduled date.

The only problem with your hypothesis is this : they are not sold as A70IT, they are clearly marked 70b on the unit and the retail box is marked A70IT v2, whats more, when you go into settings>about, the details in there are identical to the ones running Honeycomb

Not exactly...
Acoording what I read and undestood:
If you buy au 7oIT, you receive a HC 7ob IT tablet. These tablet has just been release (Jbmm has received its one from Archos last Friday). Almost no one has this tablet.
If you buy a 7o IT, some have received a Froyo 7ob IT tablet insted of a 7o IT tablet (since the end of December), some have received a 7o IT, depending of the stocks.

Mu hypothesis is: they seem idetical, they have the same packaging, they are not exactly the same.
And the problem of firmware anec bricked tablets is real. We are waiting for an answer from Archos.

I'm curious what you think the difference is, they have same screen, ram, chipset etc, neither have gps - what other difference could there be hardware wise ?

Google agreement for one.
Firmware not compatible.
What I say: they seem identical.
What do you know about inner components ? usb, memory series...

And what I said : "I guess" only.

Called Archos today about trying to install Honeycomb on my recently purchased 70b (it2) running Froyo. I was told that it is impossible to do as an upgrade, as Honeycomb would need to be blown onto the unit as it was being built at the factory and I was therefore stuck with Froyo and Froyo related updates? Can this be true?

The answer is not enough. He doesn't say why Archos doesn't avoid the HC installation on a Froyo tablet.
The reality is : you can install the firmware HC on froyo but the tablet is imediatly and definitely killed.

Guys on xda can have a look at this. Personally, I think there is no hardware differences between the two tablets.

What I think about the issue:

- It's spring 2011, Archos thinks: an updated version of 70IT would be nice.
- July 2011: Updated version is ready for production.
- Late summer 2011, Google doesn't want to give certification.
- Autumn 2011, Archos are stucked with contracts with suppliers, so they start with production of 70b IT without google certification and froyo.
- Autumn 2011, now the ICS/Honeycomb coede is released, Google allows Archos to release Honeycomb 70b IT.
- Winter 2011/2012, A70b IT is released to the marker.
- Winter 2011/2012, there are some problems with getting Honeycomb running on A70H.

Why do I think it went this way? A70S2 was sent to FCC 6 months ago and we got it's fotos shortly after that. Archos has never done this(sending devices to FCC 6 months before they are released).

If they are indeed identical devices, why would Honeycomb not be made available for the Froyo unit ? Apologies if I am missing something.

I'm very new to the Android and Tablet scene and recently bought an Archos 70b (Froyo) off of eBay! Does This mean I'm stuck with Froyo Firmware?

I can confirm that if you have a 70b IT v2 Froyo (2.2) tablet stick with it and do not try to put Honeycomb (3.2) on it, I did by mistake after downloading the wrong firmware but for some reason saving it in my Archos file as 2.2 (watching Olympics). I now have either a trendy paperweight or a few spare parts pending me finding a cheap working mother/main board to swap over.
