Music folder won't accept more than 28gb of music

Ok Newbie here.
Just got hold of this 250gb 70 unit which I have bought mostly to use as a large capacity mp3 player.

My problem is that when I try to load all of my music {some 160gb} into the music folder it gets to around 28gb then freezes and won't accept any more files, not even into the video or gallery folders.
The internal memory still shows 214gb available but I cannot seem to access it. Even connected to my pc I can't add files to new folders that I have created.

So has anyone else encountered this problem and is there a fix?

Have you tried a factory reset?

Yes I have tried every reset option including as a last resort a factory reset.

I don't know if there is a limit to the number of files this device can see, but it does seem strange that whilst I still have all this unused capacity I can't load anything on to it.
