New Gen 8 Firmware within 2 weeks
New Gen 8 Firmware within 2 weeks
According to Archos Facebookpage:
"Official ARCHOS, Inc.
For those asking about Gen 8 firmware update: I just got word that it should be available within 2 weeks. I don't have any other details."
Anyone know what kind of update? Anything major or just a "usual" FW update?

Standard fw update-fixing the stuff they messed up in the last one.
Re: New Gen 8 Firmware within 2 weeks
Probably yes....
Re: New Gen 8 Firmware within 2 weeks
I think it will be the last "major" firmware that we are getting... After that it will only be bugfixing...
Re: New Gen 8 Firmware within 2 weeks
I think your right, we won't see anymore Android Updates in my opinion, Gingerbread etc.

I'm pretty sure it is a standard firmware update to fix bugs, tough I am hopping I'm wrong and that it is an update to Gingerbread.

I really don't want Gingerbread. Froyo has a lot of application support and I don't want Archos to release a new version of Android that is going to cause more problems than it has solved. I would prefer a well polished Froyo over a simi polished Gingerbread.
However, I am excited about the new firmware and I hope it fixes the two issues I am experiencing.

Just fix the wi-fi problems that cause reboot loops.

I'd settle if it just stopped boot looping once a week
Re: New Gen 8 Firmware within 2 weeks
If it's completely stable and doesn't break anything or do weird stuff I might consid er upgrading from 2.0.71.... so I probably won't bother

Re: New Gen 8 Firmware within 2 weeks
Is there any reason why they can't increase the app storage size?
Re: New Gen 8 Firmware within 2 weeks
I guess you can only change this by wiping existing data, as it will need a change in the partitioning scheme of the device's storage. So it won't be easy to upgrade without a backup / restore routine. So for the majority of people who use this as a multimedia device, this would be very inconvenient.Hajile_Ibushi wrote:Is there any reason why they can't increase the app storage size?
Sure, they could give us the option. But then again, they could do many things (fix major issues, implement hideable software buttons, upgrade OS to gingerbread etc)...
Re: New Gen 8 Firmware within 2 weeks
You can, and without losing any data, if you have full root and SDE installed.Hajile_Ibushi wrote:Is there any reason why they can't increase the app storage size?
Check out what went on here:

The whole discussion is here:

* The good stuff starts at post 37, and some people had luck with just that method, but mine wasn't working. The link above worked easier and better for me (the first link in my post here, to post 54 of the same thread).
Feel free to ask questions, as it took me a while to get it right, but I managed to copy everything over without losing any data.
This is the OFFICIAL FIRMWARE, ANDROID 2.2, with a custom kernel (for root).

NOTE: All thanks for this definitely go to Chulri and wdl1908! They did some amazing work on this! I just did some messing around to get my problem fixed, and a thanks to Dark Dragon as well for suggesting the partition manager route.
Re: New Gen 8 Firmware within 2 weeks
Now then, can someone give us step to step to expand the app storage?
Re: New Gen 8 Firmware within 2 weeks
Use post 37 in the thread I posted (the second link I posted). If you have problems, try reading through the rest of the thread. That post is a step-by-step, but it wouldn't work for me, as I had multiple problems. You can see the problems I had in that thread.
