why do you people assume archos did this?

christ, it's not that hard to understand the technology. all the apk does is copy the proper versions of the files to a hidden directory on your IT.
you can do it through terminal emulator, which is what those of us who didn't want to wait for another g4archos apk to come out.

all you had to do was get Vending.apk and a few other files from a phone running 2.2 into the hidden app folder on your archos.

the fact is it works on other devices. reverse engineering is always possible and mostly easy. there is no reason at all to assume archos had anything to do with a market hack. android is made to have it by default, they took it out. maybe they could have gone to extra measures to prevent people from reinstalling it - but they surely didn't have to go so far as to give people a way to put it on.

i can see how it could make sense, and help sales - but the percentage of people that know about appslib vs market, the percentage of those that care, and then the percentage of those that would be willing to use an apk they found on a forum site is small, and that is not a huge selling point.

I am not sure but don;t remember you offering any help when the shizzle hit the fizzle.... ;)

Has anyone tried unpacking the gapps4archos2.apk and updating the apk's inside? Maybe take the available apk's from cyanogen and overwrite what's in this package...

I just got my tablet today but I'm stuck at work for a few more hours. I can probably build the package if anyone wants to test it...

EDIT: There are only a couple of differences between the two, most are the same. Could still be worth a shot though.
In the cyanogen gapps package there is also a onetimeinitializer.apk which is not in the gapps4archos2.apk... does anyone know if that could be the dealbreaker?

I already had that problem under 2.1... but only in portrait. are you sure it doesn't work OK in landscape?

L0stS0ul wrote:This APK does more than the market.rar. It also includes the needed libraries and frameworks that were missing from the market.rar. It also only includes the files that are actually symlinked from /system/app to /data/test/froyo/system/app. The market.rar looks to have been a zipped up cyanogen google apps package without the libraries and frameworks. That's why a lot of people that did the market.rar are getting lockups and FC's. Plus you'll notice the voice search and google maps are broken with the market.rar approach. This apk fixes all that.
Ok this inspired me to do a reset and install the gapps4archos2, to see if there was any improvements.

And one thing I can confirm is that Maps now has working location service. The previous market.rar install didn't have that.

I can also confirm that now youtube doesn't work (it is version 1.6.21).
First there was an update available, which I tried to install, and failed.
Then youtube appeared in market as an "not installed" app, even though it is, but trying to install it fails.

But since I do not use youtube that often it is not a big deal. I can wait for a fix.

Not sure if I am up to replacing apk files within gapps4archos2, and doing another reset.

I have found a solution for the "youtube problem" at a swedish forum, just follow these simple steps and you are good to go. Might work with other apps aswell(?).

1. Download, install and start "android terminal emulator" from Market
2. Enter below lines in the app and finish each line with an enter

cd /data/test/froyo/system/app
rm YouTube.apk

3. Close the app (back out) and reboot
4. Download YouTube from Market.

Easy as 123(4)! :)

So should I wait longer, or do gapps4Archos2?

I downloaded YouTube by Google apk from Applanet and it works fine.. but HD playback isn't extremely smooth sadly. (Should be). Most my apps I had backup's of I installed from DropBox also.

Most, if not all, of the missing apps - Google Maps, Launcher Pro, etc. - show up in the Market after following the simple procedure described below:

It works for me.

Didn't work on my 101, lame.

Edit: I spoke too soon. It worked, not with every app that was missing but most of them.

So it's an issue of the apk including an outdated version of youtube? Can the person who created the apk update it with a newer version of youtube?

Please remember, not all of the apps you had that worked in 1.6/2.1 will work in Froyo 2.2!!

That said, with a Market install for Froyo 2.2, the apps that do not fulfill this format will no longer show as downloadble (is that a word?)

If you can no longer see your FAV app in 2.2 Market, email the author, don't moan to Archos!!!

Enjoy! :D :D :D
Well the apps I can't find on Market with the tablet, I can see with my 2.2 Froyo Nexus one :) ... so i assume they still work with 2.2 android.

I've also repacked the gapps4archos2.apk

I just took all of the apk's that were originally in the package and replaced them with the apk's from cyanogens gapps package. I can't test it for another two hours or so, but if anyone wants me to up it for them I can.
