Froyo firmware 2.0.54 released, report bugs here

Post by zhang965 »

Download here: http://update.archos.com/8/gen8/gen8_2. ... d_gen8.aos

Beware:

Upgrading from Eclair to Froyo is a big deal. Consider it kind of like upgrading from Windows 95 to Windows XP. A clean install is recommended.

The firmware comes with a recommended "Android Reset" functionality. It will delete all your Android apps if you choose to do it. (Maybe you can back them up using Astro something app first and restore them after.)

If after Reset you still experience problems, maybe you should first format the Archos using recovery mode on boot (volume+power for 3 seconds), then install a totally clean Froyo firmware there (back up all your multimedia files first!). To be confirmed. Anyways, take it easy. Don't panic. Report your successes and look for solutions if you have any problems here in the forum.

Firmware Changes:

Version 2.0.54 - Android "Froyo" 2.2.1 - November 30th, 2010

- Higher performance: just in time compiler (JIT) technology makes applications run up to 5 times faster than previous Android "Eclair" 2.1 firmwares
- Enhanced Microsoft Exchange support: it is now possible to synchronize contacts and calendar events
- Allow to install more 3rd party applications by installing them on the storage memory (for applications that supports it)
- Video: movie information and cover retrieval in video file info dialog
- Multiple selection mode is now always enabled in the file manager
- External bluetooth GPS receivers are now supported
- Better assistance is provided in the tethering wizard to pair with cell phone using bluetooth DUN profile (smart APN detection)
- OpenVPN is now supported
- Slideshow support for network shares has been added to Gallery and Photoframe applications
- Photoframe: full screen picture can now be displayed on double tap when in floating image mode
- Manual white balance setting has been added in Camera application
- Faster USB write transfer
- Battery: more accurate battery charge estimation
- Audio: improved compatibility with android audio stream volume management (voice/music/ringtone etc.)
- Orientation: fixed compatibility issue with some applications working with inverted accelerometer axis

I just noticed it on my own - been checking their firmware page a couple of times yesterday and today. Great news! :D

I think I read a reply from Archos to someone's mail, that this version will not support flash ... that will come in week or two after the Froyo update.

Wow, doesn't even list on US site but the link is genuine (for those of us handicapped not to speak French). Installing now. Yippee! =D>

Will those people ranting and griping and calling Archos dogs now publicly eat crow? My Samsung Galaxy S is still needing custom ROMs to get that Froyo goodness...

Off to that post on the market...

bizarre that it doesnt support flash. should be able to install flash from market (if someone ports the google apps over to this)

do all the devices use the exact same rom image then? find that very odd given the different hardware (cpu's/screens prolly other stuff)

Eat crow! I will not, good sir! Yea, as sure as I am a gentleman I would thrash thee for thine impudence!

But it is good to see that Froyo is finally here. And GM just drove out the first production Chevy Volt onto stage. So good news all around.

And my A70 is "out for delivery" by UPS. So if I can get it before I leave for work in exactly 2 hours, I will be very very happy.

The old 1.0.84 firmware is also the same download for all gen8 devices.

The OTA update will probably be made available later today. They haven't even updated their firmware webpage yet.
