Installing Ubuntu MID Edition on Archos 7?

Post by presb4 »

Has any body tried or know if it is possible to install a new OS on the Archos 7. I noted that Ubuntu has a OS version out for touch screen internet mobile devices. Check it out at http://www.ubuntu.com/products/mobile :p

So far as we know, there is no way to install anything except Archos software on any unit released in the last year or so. Archos has worked very hard indeed to ensure that this is so, and they've made an excellent job of locking the device shut.

even if it could be installed perfectly on the archos, you would still need to integrate your device unique serial number + archos random serial number with the operating system files for the installation to be validated.

i ws checking that sit out and wow that would be an awesome alternative to the stock os, i really wish that they had implemented a way to do thais like sony did with the ps3 and allowing secondary operating systems, its still somewhat unhackable but the addition of the second os really expands its customer base. it was a foolish choice in my opinion for archos to limit thier so called "internet media tablets" to only what they prodice that thier tiny database of plug ins that they provide and never update.

Anything can be hacked. Yes you can put other operating systems on your Archos 7. The following hack installs onto the HD, and does not overwrite Archos OS in flash memory It would be equivalent to a duel boot(but not really)

Use the following link to download: PspWxp, which will allow you to install Windows XP on your Archos.

Here is a visual example of XP being installed, and then run on the A5:

I am sure that Ubuntu can be installed in a similar manner, but I have not tried it, as I use both Fedora Core, and BackTrack, and have no interest in putting another albeit stable version of Linux on the A7.

P.S.
Remember this; as long as there are inputs, and outputs in any device then that means that it can be hacked. 8)

Are you sure it's a con?

I guess perhaps a good remote desktop AJAX and Flash combination script could be made and thus generated into local html files that you can launch on the Archos Opera browser nicely and which would remotely connect to your Windows desktop to use it over the Internet while your Windows computer needs to be turned on and hosting the remote desktop client at all times. That html package of files thing might include the remote desktop password inside of the actual files so it automatically would logon.

Well I haven't checked pspWxp so I don't know what it really is about.

Hehe lol th psp xp is a joke. You didn't seriously think that was hacking did you? It is just a collection of html pages that don't extend the functionality of the archos whatsoever. Its doesnt allow you to install programs. It is just a locally stored web page with links on the icon images linking to other pages.

I wouldnt even bother downloading it if I was you.

I am with the same objective: UBUNTU MID. The archos 7 dont bring anything really helpfull and I wanted right from the beginning put a linux on it, and Ubuntu MID is just perfect. What I realize now is that it will be a litle bit harder than I tought. I will consider a VNC app as an option, but I hope that any of us will find a way to ubuntu our A7. So any advance on that please let us know!

cheers

Very interesting discussion indeed. I have an Archos 5 (the one without Android) and I am almost reaching my 30 days after the purchase and I am considering to send it back if I there is no way to hack it up :?

Sorry about the bump, but this is an interesting question and goes along with my Meego question. Now that Angstrom is being offered up, is Ubuntu MID possible?
