No I'm still being told that the only way to get it is through the post.

That sounds good, hope they don't change their story on us again.

btw who said that that the only way to get it was to get it through the post.
Was it someone on the phone you spoke to or a reply to an email.
They don't seem to reply to my emails when I ask them that.
I just want some evidence just incase they say they won't when I phone them.

I hope that doesn't mean a printout on 6000 pages! That would certainly be a mean thing to do!

Oh god.... if they did that it'd be pretty worthless to us.
luckily the site specifically says they'll send a CD-R

In response to your question... on the phone I think they've only told me that they don't have it yet I think...
via email though,
"Zach,

Section 3-b of the GNU GPL v2 is as follows:

"Accompany it with a written offer, valid for at least three years, to give
any third party, for a charge no more than your cost of physically performing
source distribution, a complete machine-readable copy of the corresponding
source code, to be distributed under the terms of Sections 1 and 2 above on a
medium customarily used for software interchange;"

http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html

From what I gather, we are required to offer it via mail as to provide equal
access to the source (i.e. not everyone has access to the internet). There is
no requirement for online posting. Please write to the address in the link
below if you would like a copy of the source code."

That was just "Archos Information", their normal email address or whatever, but I had been talking online with a Tony Davis there.

i dont understand how they can provide an online link for the pma 400 source code, but they say they are only able to post the 604wifi source because "not everyone has an internet connection" .............................................

how and why would someone without internet even be doing anything about this?

According to the terms of the GPL, they must supply a machine readable copy. That copy must be readable by a majority of (removable) mass storage devices currently on the market. That means a CD or DVD in this case. So, they cannot just print out the source on A8 or US Letter and satisfy the requirement. If they wanted to be tricky, the most obscure they probably could get away with, and still be in compliance, would probably be a small XD card formatted in EXT2.

I received a phone call from Archos UK today and they said they were not sure if they would accept a cheque in pounds, so I would (or zachman123 would) have to email who ever said that I need to send a cheque and ask them, if they would accept pounds.
Should I just send it anyway and hope for the best?

I sent an email asking, I'll tell when I get a response (should be today, I sent it yesterday)
If I don't get a response, I guess yeah then just send it. It's not like they'd cash the check and not send anything....

This was the reply I got for from [email protected].

Dear customer

The GPL source will be soon available on our website.

Best regards

ARCHOS web team.
I've replied asking when.

This was the reply I got from [email protected]:

Talat,

Yes, you will need to send a letter requesting the code to that address along with the equivalent of 15 euros.

Thank you,
Jeremy F
Archos Technical Support.

I will probably send of the cheque tommorrow.

My latest reply from [email protected], I asked them when it would be available on the internet.

Dear customer

I do not know when, it depends on our Research & Development team. Do not send any cheque, GPL sources are free.

Best regards

ARCHOS web team

Sounds like the webmaster wants us to get the source at least!

I guess we should do what he/she says and just wait.

Yeah I made the comment that the 604 wifi could be the iphone. I was asked but is it a phone???? I said it could be....with gizmo on it.
http://www.gizmoproject.com/
now if archos would open up a bit sooner.
I think Nokia is now using gizmo on the phones and the N800
http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/no ... roject.php
Maybe archos can get in on it!!!

I've been sending more emails to archos and I was planning on calling again just so that they'd feel some pressure to release it, but.... is this just going to annoy them, or should keep on emailing/calling?

edit: From Archos Information ([email protected])
"Zach,

There is no ETA at this time as to when it may be available online."

They are using a standard corporate stalling technique... you ought to call them on it...

Yeah I sent another email to the FSF telling with that message, hopefully the FSF will do something about it but now I'm not even sure, the FSF thanked me for alerting them weeks ago, but they don't seem to have done anything yet. Maybe they'll tell me what their plan is now? I don't know.

Any other ideas?
