Playing directly off usb drive (usb host support)

Post by jgrauman »

I just got off the phone with archos support, and asked whether it is possible to play files directly off a usb hard drive or usb flash drive using an archos 405 with mini dock. I was told that you can transfer from the usb drive to the archos, but could not play directly from the usb drive. Can someone confirm this for me? I want to be able to play directly off a usb hard drive, and assumed that any player with usb host support would be able to do this. Also, since this is only a software issue, if indeed this is not possible, is it possible/likely to be fixed in the (very) near future? Thanks.

thats strange, on my 604 im always plugging in usb keys and external hard drives to view movies etc, i cant see archos removing this feature on the latter models. It was hit and miss getting hard drives to work i have a few that wont and one that i made up my self that plays fine.
The things that dont work are bookmarks and resume features when viewing external sources but other than that ive never had a problem.

Can anyone confirm that this works on the 405 as well? Thanks.

Your usb hard drive needs to be battery powered or wall powered for it to work. Those USB powered hard drives don't work, though USB powered flash drives work cause they require less power than hard drives.

Thanks. I know about the power requirements, I was more asking if the 405 can play directly off the hard drive without having to copy the files to the archos itself. Thanks.

I cant find the link... But someone posted a picture of the 405 with the mini dock and a Key Drive, playing a movie....

So Im pretty sure it would do it... also there are few Key Drive that wont be recognize but its rare...

And the ones that use a program like my Titanium SD.. uses U3 I removed it cause it used to take about 30 seconds to be recognized by the Archos... now with just drag and drop it takes 3 secs
