Just to get things started, here are a few questions that might be appropriate.

1. What are the differences between the 604 and 504?
2. What are the differences between the 604 and 604 WiFi?
3. How do I get my DVDs onto my player?
4. What resolution should I choose for my movies?
5. Which Codec has the best quality?
6. Which Cameras and Card Readers work with the USB connection on the Dock?
7. Can I record TV Shows on my Archos and play them elsewhere?
8. What accessories are must-haves and why?
9. Which software is best for conversions?

Now we can work on the answers!

A point raised only once as far as I know, but of importance to everybody according to me would be: how to defrag your 504:

And one partial (which docking stations) but very adequate answer to Pingmeister's
8. What accessories are must-haves and why?
is given in: http://img160.imageshack.us/my.php?imag ... asstt3.jpg

Q: Can you upgrade the hard drive on your 604/504?

A: Currently it's not possible to upgrade the hard drive on either model. Archos has added code to the firmware that identifies the original drive sold with the unit. Adding a new hard drive will result in a hard disk error message.

1. Hdd size for a start, 504 uses 2.5" hdd and the 604 uses 1.8" hdds thats why the 604 is slimmer. The 604 has a kickstand, 504 dosent.
The 504 has slightly better battery life as the cell is much bigger, but for me there is not enough in it to upgrade to 504 seres. Oh yeah the 604 is 100 higher than the 504 lol.

2. hmmm, bit self explanitry really, hmmm, the 604 has no wifi so no web browers and everything that comes with it, the 604 wifi has hmmm wifi!!

3. number of ways, down to personal preferance, i personally use dvd shrink then when the vob files are on my pc i can either copy them to the archos or recode them to avi using pocket divx encoder. Others use clone dvd mobile, lathe etc etc etc.

4. this is also down to personal preferance, what you gona use the files for tv viewing or lcd viewing. If your going to view on a tv you want the higher res lcd lower, check the documentation for the limits on the machine.

5. h264 seems to give best for file size v quality. but for me i like xvid and divx. For the best quality VOB or Mpeg2.

6. dunno dont have one

7. yes

8. Once again this is also down to personal preferance, everyone will be different in the way they want use there players and where.
good quality headphones, why... because you wont hear it without them, Go for shures or eytomics if you have the money, if not then koss the plug / sparkplug.
Case, nice leather one so it protects the machine
Mini Amp, i use penguin amp because the sound is utter crap on the 04 series.
Portable travel dock (usb) because ive got lazy mates that want my media but wont look for it themselves, with this i can copy over my files to their players at full usb speed, also this dock allows charge on the go because im not chained to a pc and it can be a couple of days before i can plug in the machine to a usb output.
Powerrunner, to charge the machine with the portable dock on the move.

9. what audio or video??

The questions you have asked are so varied in there answers that ppl cannot possibly answer them accuratly in most cases. I like some programs that work for me, others hate them and have had probs and use something else. There is no "this is the best codec, proggie accessories" etc, its all down to personal choice.
You need to ask "what is a good proggie for ripping video?". then you will get various answers from auto gk, clone mobile, pocket divx encoder, lathe etc etc etc, there is no definate yes or no to these questions, thats why you didnt get any replies to the thread.

Actually, I just posted questions like you would normally find in a FAQ. Eventually hopefully we will get multiple answers to each and they can be compiled/edited.

I have every intention of answering these myself when I get time.

They are drawn from the multiple posts we gete here asking these same questions.

As an example:

2. What are the differences between the 604 and 604 WiFi?

A: The 604 WiFi has wireless capability using 802.11g. This allows it to transfer files wirelessly and also includes a basic web browser for surfing the web.

The 604 WiFi is slightly larger and heavier than the basic 604 version and the battery can run-out substantially faster when using WiFi.

504 - PAL or NTSC odoesn't matter?

Post by werdnawee »

Hi,

I live in Australia and will be importing a 504.

In Australia, we use the PAL format. Will the 504 have issues with recording DVDs from a PAL DVD player.

Also, will it have problems playing back videos on a PAL television?

Thanks

No problem recording eigther PAL or NTSC, and no problem outputting PAL or NTSC. All Archos devices are multi-format, you can simply set the tv-output format in the settings and the input format detection is automatic or you can maybe also change it in recording settings.

Q: Will the plug on the Archos itself output video?

A: Yes, the headphone jack on the Archos will output video as well as audio if you use the correct cable. Archos sells a cable which will do the trick and a few other players use cables compatible with the Archos including the Creative ZEN Vision/VisionM, IBOOK, and Cowon. So one of their cables will work as well. One thing to be aware of is that the VIDEO IPOD PLUG WILL NOT WORK.

Thanks to yjokd for this info.

Q: How best to sync MP3s & playlists with a PC?

A: Use MediaMonkey, but use the Archos in "PC Hard Drive" mode and configure MediaMonkey to access it via it's "USB Mass Storage" plugin, not the (default?) WMD plugin. (See Tools/Options/"Portable/Audio Devices"). Sync tracks to "\Music\..." (e.g. "\Music\<Album Artist>\<Album>\<Track#:2> - <Title>") and playlists to "\Playlists".

Pingmeister wrote:Q: Can you upgrade the hard drive on your 604/504?

What????? What could possible be the motivation for this? If the unit is out of warranty, and the hard drive fails, what do you do? I have two Archos jukeboxes that were easily upgradable. I just bought an Archos 705 that I am disappointed in and now this. I picked up a 504 on closeout and thought I had a good deal. I have a feeling I will not be purchasing another Archos product!

Does this apply to replacing the original (now broken) hard drive with an identical model (40 Gb, 4200 rpm)?
Any way to change the disk volume information?
Any way to reboot to an older firmware version that didn't bind the device to a particular disk?
