Re: Firmware 2.3.81 released - report bugs here

Do you usually make ad hominem attacks on folks who disagree with you?

No .
I think you're walking on eggs.

Hokay. Anyway, sticking to workarounds. Yes, let's talk about workarounds.

Someone says "don't hack your device, that will cause less problems". The response is: "So as long as you ...

Re: Firmware 2.3.81 released - report bugs here

If I were a software engineer for Archos, I would secretly rather not have people like you buying the device that has my software on it.

What products are you a developer for? I would like to avoid them. :? :|

Let me guess, "developer elitism". Sure, whatever. Enjoy things that don't work.

Re: Firmware 2.3.81 released - report bugs here

So, as long as you don't actually use your device, it works just fine.

If I were a software engineer for Archos, I would secretly rather not have people like you buying the device that has my software on it. You obviously bought a device that doesn't have the capabilities you want (i.e. Market ...

Re: Firmware 2.3.81 released - report bugs here

WOW... it would seem with no complaints since July 25, that this OS is pretty darn stable with few if any real issues.

Just sayin.
Either that or all the complaints have been voiced and people are now waiting for the next firmware to fix the stuff that the complaints were about.

People have ...

Re: Android 2.3 Gingerbread, 3.0 Honeycomb rumors and facts

For too long software developers have relied on PCs getting faster CPUs and more memory as an excuse to write crappy software. It's become such an epedemic that now you're seeing pressure on smartphone and tablet makers to have *at least* a gig of RAM in their devices, something that, even if you ...

Re: List of Bluetooth tethering phones that work on Froyo

PAN is much better if it works. DUN is a horrible hack that really has a hard time working with non-Windows computers and devices. SDP is Service Discovery Protocol. That is the protocol Bluetooth devices use to inform each other of what they support. All these "profiles" you hear about are actually ...

Look. Speaking as someone who has bought handheld computer type devices for well over a decade (I had a Palm IIIxe, two weeks on two AAA batteries), and someone who has been searching for the "perfect" embedded Linux device for almost as long- I can tell you based on how this industry works- both ...

Re: List of Bluetooth tethering phones that work on Froyo

I was one who could bluetooth tether with my DroidX (NOT ROOTED!) with my 101. It was wonderful, and worked well when bluetooth GPS-ed as well.

Well, I did upgrade (still w/Verizon) to Samsung Chase. Great phone, but when I when exactly through the same process as the DroidX (which I duplicated ...

This is exactly why I do a full wipe before I update my firmware. I like to start completely fresh every time, and I have yet to have any real issues...

I'm at the point of a full wipe to clear out the cobwebs so I can better manage performance... what full wipe do you use?

TIA

Fun fact: The current release of Linux is 2.6.39, released 5/19/11 according to ftp.kernel.org's mtime for the tarball. The previous release of 2.6.38 was released 3/15/11. They are working on releasing 3.0 soon (not as big ...

So does the WiFi work in any of these alternative OSes or is that still a no go?

I've been testing Debian with gnome in my Archos 70 and wifi is working flawlessly... but there are other things not working. (Sound, Orientation, virtual keyboard not working with modal windows opened)...

PDAnet (Bluetooth DUN; _NOT_ USB) with Gen8 (f/w 2.3.26)

So while Archos' tethering capability might not be the greatest (as in the most flexible), it is there. And you can do some modest hacking on it with the SDE, by editing /data/tether_start.

The Archos' Bluetooth DUN capability presents a tantalizing option for tethering an Android smartphone to the ...

You know, it occurs to me Archos is walking a fine line with this sort of thing, if they intend to enforce voided warranties due to the SDE. Because someone could make a stink about it- should they have a warranty ...

It'd be nice if these Taiwanese and Chinese companies actually made products that they tested and engineered instead of making products on the cheap or trying to get attention with gimmicks.

Re: Android 2.3 Gingerbread, 3.0 Honeycomb rumors and facts

So did Sprint formerly have a 3 gig soft cap? I ask this because I recently got onto a prepaid Virgin Mobile plan, which is operated by Sprint and uses their 3G network. I was told by the person who recommended it to me that there was such a cap, but maybe things have changed.

Wireless Tether for ...
