For you homescreens you can use ADW which can backup its settings. I never tried the backup of ADW though.

What launcher are you using? I use Adw launcher which can be configured to split the icon names and wrap the text. Works fine for me.

i tried to use hibernate app for a couple of days as someone suggested. It works great.

So for instance when i go to sleep I press the hibernate widget. It brings the tablet to plane mode.
It prevents battery drain. Also havent had any unwanted shut down or freeze in standby mode.

If you want to save battery life (while not using your device) use hibernate. It switches to plane mode and saves power. There is a widget you can place on your home screen to switch it on or off. Well there is some system level copying as described above, but it is far from perfect. There is some room for improvement in android if I compare this to my windows mobile phone. ULTRA keyboard is very good though.
