Re: Do you still use your gen 8?

I dumped my A70 and got a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. With open ROMs and ICS coming via Cyanogen, it was the more sensible choice.

I got really tired of the A70 being crippled in RAM and apps storage. If it worked as well as the Tegra/tegra2 tablets, I would have liked it much more. Then, there's the ...

Re: Firmware 2.4.19 released - report bugs here

These last two reports from Bouldergeek and Greg_e put the final stopper for me. I'm staying at 2.1.8

Allen

Yeah, I was steadfast on 2.1.8. I can't remember what made me think that an upgrade was wise. I do regret it, albeit mildly. It's not an actual showstopper, but I would counsel to stay at ...

Re: Firmware 2.4.19 released - report bugs here

I'm such an idiot for upgrading from 2.1.8.

2.4.19 is two steps back. Constant FC of apps like Kindle and Nook. Periodic reboots and lockups. Just poor quality all over.

I wonder if the Kindle Fire would be a better, more professional experience?

Re: Very poor experience

Well, after a year with the A70, I'm never buying another Archos product at full price. I'd have to get a screaming deal (like half or more off) in order to revisit this experience.

Re: Firmware 2.4.19 released - report bugs here

Unhappily, my A70 is now worse after the 2.4.x update. I was happily on 2.1.8 and resisted all of the 2.3.x updates. I should have missed this on,e as well.

Screen refresh coming out of apps will give me a screen with background, but no apps or widgets. It may stay like this for 30 ...

Re: New Support Feature

Yeah, I've been on the Net since the Eighties.

Pardon me for not being impressed with the latest and probably temporary fad.

But, with all of the crap masquerading as quality in today's world, it's par for the course. I'm sure it will be helpful to the masses. I just find it about as useless as ...

Re: New Support Feature

What is this Facebook?

Is it like MySpace, for kids and basement dwellers?

is it like AOL? I loved that "You've got mail" sound. So funny.

Sorry, I need E-mail to describe my problem, and FTP/SCP/Torrent/NZB transport to pull binaries.

But, this might be useful to someone's Mom.

Re: Android 2.3 Gingerbread, 3.0 Honeycomb rumors and facts

I believe that the 802.11n issue is that the Archos Gen 8 only supports 2.4GHz while many access points run at 5GHz for N.

In my home with 2.4 Ghz 802.11G and 5Ghz 802.11N, my old HTC Evo connected at N speeds, since it spoke 5GHz after the 2.2 FroYo upgrade. However, "N" devices like the Archos ...

Re: Firmware 2.4.19 released - report bugs here

Thanks for that positive review, ruellia.

I am very much on the fence about upgrading from 2.1.8. Like you stated, it has been fine for me, and I am happy that I skipped some of the more problematic releases.

I've been fooling around with Gingerbread ROMs on my HTC Thunderbolt phone, so my Archos ...

Re: Should I buy an Archos 70?

I wouldn't buy an Archos 70, knowing what I know after living with it for a year.

Viewsonic GTabs are ~$240 out there. Far faster and better provisioned, and run Gingerbread.

Refurb Nook Colors running FroYo are available for $99. Far more active developer community.

Given that, I wouldn't may ...

Re: Firmware 2.4.19 released - report bugs here

Still on 2.1.8, and I guess that I should be happy for that. This makes three iterations of firmware that I won't be upgrading to!

Good thing that the Archos was cheap. It's definitely not a top-tier flagship product. But, given that, it's been working pretty well, and aside from sluggish ...

Re: Firmware 2.3.81 released - report bugs here

WOW... it would seem with no complaints since July 25, that this OS is pretty darn stable with few if any real issues.

Just sayin.
Either that or all the complaints have been voiced and people are now waiting for the next firmware to fix the stuff that the complaints were about.

People have ...

Re: Lol Its happening again :)

As one who was on the interminable waiting lists for Gen 8 "tables" back around September 2010, I wouldn't fall for any of their marketing doublespeak.

I like my A70, but after everything we've been through over the last year, it is more like a Heathkit than a finished project. I like it as a Nook ...

Re: new firmware 2.3.26 - report bugs here

This update revision seems to be taking as long as Duke Nukem Forever....

Glad I never went for 2.3.26 but stayed on 2.1.8. A70 just chugging along. Though, my new HTC Thunderbolt kills it in every way except for e-reader.

Re: Open letter to Archos: Where's the love for current owne

I've rooted the Nexus One, Samsung Captivate and ViewSonic GTablet.

But, I also am running stock firmware on the Archos, because it is currently functional for me, and I have a bit of distrust for its ability to be opened up cleanly.

I will probably get tired of the artificial storage limitation ...

Re: Open letter to Archos: Where's the love for current owne

I'm happy with 2.1.8 on my A70.

But, I won't be spending any more money on another Archos product. The failures in design, delivery and support of the Gen 8 devices have convinced me to support other companies in the future.

I am glad that I avoided this release, and have stuck with 2.1.8.

My A70 is very usable, never a crash, good battery life, and speedy enough.

I guess it is abandonware, now, however. Ah, well, as long as it functions.

Re: All this negative talk makes me nervous

I use mine every night. I got on the first round of backorders back in September. that was a serious drag.

I like the 70 more than I did the ViewSonic GTablet with twice the space, speed and memory.

I'm still running 2.1.8 and having no persistent problems. Other than the short-sighted 300MB app ...
