Re: Archos RAM

@frahse Actually, I'm in entire agreement with your conservative position. The tablet of today is still mainly a "want" rather than a "need" item. If one needs to go through cost-justification, then the arguments are mostly against buying a tab: a nascent OS and software ecosystem, dodgy user experi...

Re: Hi, I am Craig from ARCHOS

Now is the time for all good marketers to step up! Yes, Craig, I'm looking at you! It's a marketing screw up of epic proportions: Leading users to have high expectations, then capping them at the knees with a price hike AND a specs cut. BEFORE you got their money?!? Explanations ar...

Re: Hi, I am Craig from ARCHOS

I don't think it's a matter of underclocking. The 1.0GHz part is undoubtedly less expensive to buy. Using Shenzhen-level components has helped Archos with low pricing in Gen8. In stepping up the component quality, I think their costs have risen as well, and now pricing is no longer their advantage. ...

Re: Processor and Pricing from Archos.com

If the speculated prices are true, Archos G9 will have a tough go at retail, as many Tegra 2 tabs will be discounted to below those prices. For now, Asus TF is already at $400. Acer Iconia A500 is discounted to $400 (on Amazon & Walmart). Xoom 32GB is officially $500, but can be found for $450. From...

Re: Archos RAM

>I could get one now as far as most capabilities are concerned, but size (See my STAMPEDE article) is the problem. I would look at this from a cost-benefit POV. The tablet market for now is coalescing around two sizes, 10" and 7". Were I in your shoes, I would make the effort to adapt my attire (or ...

Re: Will Archos Use Windows 8 On The Gen 9?

According to the presentation, Win8 will use UEFI for all ARM devices and all non-legacy x86 PCs. No current ARM devices have UEFI. Writing a BIOS from scratch is a bit beyond the capability of your typical ROM hacker. Archos' Windows tablets were more or less a sideshow. My impression was that Arch...

Re: Free G9 GIveaway for ARCHOS Fans

I think Charbax should get the toys. He's the best cheerleader Archos has, hands down. He worked the crowd for Archos for Gen8. It wasn't his fault that Archos didn't deliver the goods on-time and with bugs galore. Make him do a different video each week. Get a hottie with big boobs to stand next to...

Re: Hi, I am Craig from ARCHOS

>There's a minimum screen requirement for honeycomb The announcement mentioned that HC 3.2 will be on G9. 3.2 is out yesterday on Xoom, which apparently introduces res independence. It's a logical stepping stone, since ICS will unite phones & tabs. Why HC wasn't released to AOS is already stated by ...

Re: Hi, I am Craig from ARCHOS

I wouldn't pay too much attention to the specs. There were user reports of the Gen8 101 weighing substantially more than its specced weight.

An impromptu poll? Everybody with a Gen8 put theirs on a scale and report what the weight is.

Re: What happened to the lightweight tablets?

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 - 595g
iPad (2) - 601g
Archos G9 101 - 649g
Asus Transformer - 680g
Toshiba Thrive - 725g
Acer Iconia A500 - 730g
Motorola Xoom - 730g

So weightwise, the G9 101 still beats out most of the current Teg2 crop.

Re: Hi, I am Craig from ARCHOS

Thanks to Raven for the link. The G9 80 doesn't look that much smaller than the iPad, despite the 2" smaller in screen size. http://www.sizeasy.com/page/size_comparison/32286-Archos-G9-101-vs-Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-10-1-vs-iPad-vs-Archos-G9-80-vs-ARCHOS-70-IT Comparison updated to include the G9 101 aga...

Re: Dates and distribution

I don't think there is hard-and-fast rule for Archos' EU-vs-US pricing. It's whatever it takes to make the target price points. For the G9 101 16GB, it's $349-vs-Ôé¼299. For the 80, $279-vs-Ôé¼249. The $70 differential between the 101 and 80 seems high to me, more than the cost+margin difference in ...

Re: Dates and distribution

Yes, pricing is different for the EU. Electronics are cheaper in the US, even after accounting for the ~20% EU VAT. Current exchange rate is Ôé¼1 to $1.45, hence the announced Ôé¼299 for the G9 101 as opposed to $349 for the US. The A43 was stated to be at $199 with 16GB in the Gen8 announcement. At...

Re: Dates and distribution

I had wondered how the heck Archos were going to pull off launching 5 different Gen8 models at the same time (6 if you count the HDD model). And it turned out that they couldn't. In that, it's a good thing that they're concentrating on the two most popular sizes for Gen9. Still, that's 4 different S...

Re: Hi, I am Craig from ARCHOS

The US has always been a "small market" with respect to Archos, no doubt not to lack of desire, but simple lack of distribution and/or manufacturing strength. Their 2010 revenue breakdown should tell the tale readily enough. http://archos.com/corporate/investors/index.html?country=us&lang=en&p=2 htt...

Hey ya Hajile!

I still have your two clips from a while back! I'm using them as sample clips for my test suites. Hey do you know of any VFR (variable framerate) ones?
