Re: Archos RAM
Your memory estimates doesn't include the video card. How much RAM is being used there? The Tegra processor uses shared RAM: some for the OS, some for graphics, some for app storage, and whatever is left goes to the running application. Yes, it will run with 512MB of RAM, but app-switching between l...

Re: Archos RAM
The Iconia A100 is right now my prime "alternate." FYI, the released version of the A100 actually has 1GB of RAM like its big brother, not 512MB: http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/press/2011/23046 http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/news/2011/08/first-7-inch-android-honeycomb-tablet-hits-stores-this-weekend.ar...

Re: Archos RAM
Inspire has 768MB of RAM, not 1GB... just so you know. ;) 768MB of "useable" RAM on the stock ROM. HTC Inspire/DesireHD is an odd beast. Technically, it has 2GB of RAM that it then "RAIDs" together. The fun thing is that if you root it and install "Gingerbeast" (An Inspire-flavor of AOSP Gingerbrea...

Re: Archos RAM
Well, I have two devices: An Archos 70 with the A8 1Ghz processor and 256MB of RAM, and an HTC Inspire with Snapdragon 1Ghz processor and 1GB of RAM. I know the processors are a bit different, but they run at the same speed. Both are running Froyo. The HTC Inspire flies through tasks, runs the Nook ...

Re: CoPilot Live 8 USA Problem
Navdroyd NDrive Sygil Aura Those are the three that I know of. Navdroyd is cheap ($7), but uses OpenStreet Maps, so lesser-known regions can be lacking. Great for populated cities, though. Searching for an address is SLOW, but it works. NDrive has always been Archos-Friendly. However, some feel that...

Re: Navigation software on 101, which one is best?
Copilot doesn't crash, just draws a screen full of gibberish when you leave the app and come back if you change the orientation. But its still running. So tap lower left to get the menu then lower right to choose exit then restart. Takes longer to type what to do than to quit and restart it. So its...

Re: Android 2.2, rumors, speculation and facts
I'm not sure why I'm spending time on this, but what the heck... Corporations provide updates to make money. If there is no money to be gained, it won't happen. Does Microsoft provide free Windows upgrades for old machines? No. Many machines can't handle newer versions of Windows, but the manufactur...

Re: Android 2.2, rumors, speculation and facts
For what it's worth...the Archos5 was the VERY FIRST Android tablet on the market. When it was released, most were still on Android 1.5. It got nearly monthly updates in it's hey day, bringing us to Android 1.6, 3D acceleration, numerous bugfixes...and they didn't charge us like Apple charged the iP...

Re: Very frustrating limiting ram problem..please help
I've had very good luck with Auto Memory Manager by slightly tweaking the "Mild Setting." The "Agressive" setting may make it feel faster, but it then becomes a ticking time-bomb when it decides to kill the wrong application. Start with the Zeam Launcher. Move as many apps as possible to the SD card...

I wish the Landscape mode was smaller, but Portrait-mode on the A70 is easily the best alternate keyboard I've used.

Re: google translate voice input problem
I use to get that error as well. It's a known issue that Google Voice doesn't play nice with the Archos Gen8 devices. It's also been blamed for intermittent slow-downs and/or lock-ups (which I did experience). I don't know of a solution personally. I simply removed Google Voice and disabled everythi...

Re: Aldiko Issue
Honestly, are they really intending to release a "customized" version of Aldiko for every device that uses Soft-buttons? Too many readers don't have this issue (FBReader, Moon+, Cool Reader, etc). They really should look into how this is done in a more generalized way.

Re: Aldiko Premium Margin Settings!
Uh oh...I thought that issue with Moon+ was only on the Archos A5 (running Android 1.6). On that, I was occasionally able to recover by running some other application (usually contacts), and selecting a contact. Most of the time the full screen would appear again. Go back to "home" and you're good t...

Re: Aldiko Premium Margin Settings!
Sadly don't have easy access to an A70 right now. Anyone care to try the new Kobo player? I hear it does side-loading well.
Like you guys, I got frustrated that there doesn't seem to be a way to load in my own ePubs into the Google Reader.

You may want to consider the Moon+ Reader. It handles the soft buttons more gracefully while having most of the same customizations as Aldiko.

Re: Android 2.2, rumors, speculation and facts
Well the Archos 7 tablet just got an update to android 2.1. It's not 2.2 but maybe we can have hope that some of that firmware will make it's way towards the 5IT? It didn't "get" an update. An updated version (V2) will be sold in Europe. This was after Engadget contacted Archos: http://www.engadget...
