LOST.dir is a folder build by the fsck processus, that checks filesystem integrity after file transfers. I dont know exactly what kind of data you can find in that folder, but i think you can expect finding, for instance, some raw blocks of data coming from clusters marked as used, but not linked to...

Correct. But you can't boot into recovery menu. That means that you couldn't update your kernel unless your replaced the custom HDD with the "authorized" one. And yes, this includes dual-boot, with AVOS. Have you really tried that ? Recovery's hdd lock check does not stop recovery boot... (at least...

Given that volume keys are a basic input device, returning key codes and states like a regular keyboard, it should be quite easy to read their status with few lines of C code. As i said before, you just have to open the right input device (/dev/input/event[0-9]) and listen for volume key press even...

According to the FCC pictures, The NAND controller and it's flash chips are on the PCB, so swapping them will probably need a bit of soldering skills...

Well, it's looks like the distributed file are part of the regular archos software, which is made of OSS _and_ Closed source software... So potential copyright issues.

There are a few things about that. If tools or procedures are developed to gain full access to the device, the manufacturer cannot take successful legal action against such tools unless it uses code from archos (not the gpl code, their proprietary code). I had that issue, and it seems that having bluetooth enabled at boot time strangely made it disappear.
