I use DVD Fab too. I go for an MKV with H264 and MP3 (stereo) Stereo set to 256, 2 passes, bump the audio up to 500%, file size set to 4gb. works a treat, and looks good enough on a telly too.

Trying to control the 70b it with an xperia mini pro, which runs android 1.6 or higher as the spec for the app
requires. Despite making the archos discoverable, the app fails to discover it.

As above, along with a host of other apps that say they are not compatible even though they're designed for gingerbread (facedroid is a prime example).

Ideally I don't want to get bogged down starting up a linux session, and I kind of figured that someone would have built an addon of some sort that would just sort me out. But, google says no.

Anyone got any thoughts? i want to be able to play files that are over 2/4gb without any fuss.

on the Archos, go to settings, storage, then change the USB Preference to PC hard drive (either of the choices).

It'll mean you can't play any DRM protected stuff (like i-player), but will allow your PC to see it as a hard drive, and will give you all the disc checking and ...

Change it out of WMP mode, so that your PC just sees it as a hard drive.

Try hooking the archos up to your PC in hard drive mode (not as a windows media player) and running checkdisc on it. Solved this type of issue for me.

You can possibly disassemble the Archos end of the USB cable to see if any of the solder joints on the wires have broken loose. Check to see if your cable has 2 tiny screws that can be removed to gain access to the innards (some do, some don't). If you are handy with a soldering iron, you can ...
