The 605 widgets requiring a network do not seem to recognize a network connection -- but I'm connected.

I can go to the opera site download the recommended widgets, "install" them yet the widgets do not appear.

Is the old Opera mobile browser to blame? Can the widgets be hacked to ...

I believe the Archos Content Portal is closed. I cannot connect, either.

I upgraded to 2.1.04 Volume seems fine and the player a bit more stable -- especially when switching out SDHC cards.

The 605 reads 32GB SDHC cards just fine. I wonder if it can read the newer 64GB SDXC (formatted to FAT32)?

Yeah it's old and some things do get fixed. I'm mostly concerned about losing sound quality and loudness with the later firmwares. If I could go back to 1.3.53 there would be no problem.

Searching for 1.7.06 has been fruitless.

Are there any issues (good or bad) with the 605 4GB flash:

Sound quality/loudness
Picture quality
Functionality

When upgrading to 2.1.04?

I do have Opera and AAC plugins.

Since the upgrade path is "one way" I would like to informed before making the leap ...

It seems to be the only 500GB portable player on the market (photo tanks notwithstanding).

I don't see any 500GB players on the horizon.

Does the 48 make a good purchase for a music/movie player and photo viewer with some internet and app capability?

The price seems to be right these days.

But is it 7mm or 9.5mm height? Archos is using the 7mm drive.

I used to use a program called "iriveter" to create video files for the AV500. Seems like a lifetime ago. I seem to recall encoding to 480x276 to match the resolution. Worked well.

Still no success after another round of searching. Archos e-mail support is of no help:

"We do not support for downgrading firmwares. We only supply and support
installation of the latest available."

I'm not trying to downgrade.

Anyone?

EDIT: I upgraded to firmware 2.1.04. Seems fine for my use.

Thank you for the comments. I'm looking for a large capacity player (250GB+) and the Archos 5/48 seems to be the only one on the market.

Does anyone have a repository of .aos firmware for the 605 4GB? The link to Archos is the only the latest and it seems every site that claims to have 1.7.06 eventually leads one to the Archos site which returns a 404 error.

It's amazing. Google search 15 pages of *specific* results, dozens of sites to download from, English, Russian, Chinese. All point back to Archos. It's as if someone or some machine replicated "driver download" sites and reconfigured each to make them look different.

I've been there. Despite how the site looks, the "external mirror" just points back to Archos which then results in a 404 error. It's been the same experience with many of the software/firmware sites.

I guess I have to look harder.

I had tried that link and get a 404 error on Archos' site. I guess the firmware isn't commonly available, as others are looking for it as well.

Is 1.7.06 the best firmware for the 605 WiFi 4GB?

If so, where can the firmware be had?

I'm at 1.3.52. Was anything taken away with the firmware updates?
