analias:
You can also boot to recovery menu and select the developer item, then the "attach archos as USB drive" item (or similar).
Connect the archos to the computer, copy the files to it, then reboot back into angstrom. viola.

Cruncher. Thanks.

Cool. Can you give me a high level rundown of how you did it? Filenames for zImage/initarmfs? Where you put them. Where you got them from (did you build them with OE/bitbake?)

Oh. And you're not *the* moot, are you?

Re: Step-by-step for building Angstrom for the A5

That's weird. Try this:
sudo su -
echo "vm.mmap_min_addr = 0" > /etc/sysctl.d/mmap_min_addr.conf
exit

Re: Got VLC up and running under SDE. REALLY slow, though.

First thing is to hook up a keyboard using the mini dock. Typing on the device is near impossible. Second thing is to get wifi working. There is a link in the "dev diary" sticky about how to do that. Third is to SSH into the archos. Use ssh if you're on Mac/Linux. Download Putty if you're ...

Re: Step-by-step for building Angstrom for the A5

I bet I know what happened. Once you've run export {{{ OETREE="${HOME}/OE" }}}, you need to use that same console window without closing it. Try this: sudo echo "vm.mmap_min_addr = 0" > /etc/sysctl.d/mmap_min_addr.conf This should ask you for your password - you shouldn't get a p...

I'll give that a shot when I get home.

Has anyone actually used the dev recovery menu to flash the device yet?

Re: Step-by-step for building Angstrom for the A5

Hello, thanks for the step by step. Sorry for my bad english. I've errors [email protected]:~/OE/openembedded$ echo "vm.mmap_min_addr = 0" > /etc/sysctl.d/mmap_min_addr.conf bash: /etc/sysctl.d/mmap_min_addr.conf: Permission denied This should be sudo echo "vm.mmap_min_addr = 0&qu...

Re: Got VLC up and running under SDE. REALLY slow, though.

Oh - I see what you mean. I don't know how to package up my existing file system as an aos/initramfs yet. I'm working on it. In the meantime, though, it's really easy to install the SDE and then install VLC.

zImage/Initramfs

I've copied a new zImage and initramfs.cpio.gz to /mnt_data, restarted in the dev menu and asked it to reflash. The archos said it found new zImage/initramfs and updated them "successfully". When I rebooted the archos, it was still the previous image. Is there a trick to reflashing the zIm...

Note that I've remoted into the Archos over wifi and am using my desktop machine, with the Archos in a window so I can use my desktop mouse/keyboard. How did you manage to do this? On the device: {{{ su opkg install x11vnc x11vnc }}} Then on the desktop, open a VNC client (tightVnc, Chicken of the ...

Just tried it out. Firefox works surprisingly well on the SDE. It's fast, and looks really good.

Re: FireFox Question

I'll install firefox now, and let you know in a couple of minutes.

Keep in mind, though, you aren't going to have your smooth Archos interface, and be able to just replace the browser with FireFox.

Angstrom is nowhere near being a replacement for the legacy Archos OS, yet.

Got VLC up and running under SDE. REALLY slow, though.

So I installed the SDE (Angstrom) and then installed VLC. It works, but it's pretty laggy when playing mp4 videos. Mp2 works pretty smoothly. I've got to say that after playing with Angstrom for the day, I'm not really impressed. It's probably a great distro for a smartphone and maybe even a PDA, bu...

Re: Developing tutorials?

Right now it's more about knowing linux than about programming. Download Ubuntu (or any distro) and create a virtual machine on your PC. Then you can play around without fear of breaking something. Force yourself to do some basic things - edit a file, move files around, install new software, install...

Please change the link for the Angstrom step-by-step to the forum post ( viewtopic.php?f=34&t=28214 ) rather than directly to my dropbox. That way any discussion in the post is available as well.

thanks,

Step-by-step for building Angstrom for the A5

I documented everything I did to get Angstrom building for the A5, from scratch. It doesn't really explain what each step does, but it's a step-by-step you can follow if you want to get up to speed quickly. It uses a virtual machine running Ubuntu, so it should be easy to follow regardless of which ...

Re: Build questions - Angstrom/OpenEmbedded/Bitbake

Awesome - this is enough to get me started for sure. I don't know how I missed that extra archive with modifications. Is there a reason they didn't just submit it to the Angstrom project? Anyhow, it still appears that we need to get things either dual booting, or get the linux build to a point where...
