I paid Archos for the battery replacement. I can confirm I got a different unit back (at least, the unit was wiped, so it COULD be the same unit with a new hdd for some reason).

However, the plugins I purchased are still installed, so I did not lose them, just all the data, which I backed up before ...

Well, I've had my archos freeze on me a few times, though I'm not sure if this is hardware or software - but a quick reset fixes it. But it has been more frequent of late.

My question would more be whether the stand-alone unit comes with the ClearChannel traffic subscription that the bundled unit does.

If not, how much does it COST for that subscription, since ClearChannel only sells it via. their resellers.

Considering that it is possible to run in 'demo' mode where it pretends you are driving, and it lets you play with the GPS settings without the GPS device attached, then I assume you can pre-program it.

I use Jabber, and enable the gateways (AIM/MSN/ICQ/Yahoo! - even IRC if I want). I setup jwchat, and away I go - its a web-based Jabber client, and because I use the gateways, I get ALL my messengers - and yes, it works from the Archos (it just uses JavaScript).
