BTW, I do find it ABSOLUTLY discusting that Archos could even consider Locking the HDD to the Device. This STINKS Big time. If your HDD fails your ONLY option is to PAY Archos HEAPS of money to get it working again. Imagine if PC manufacturers started doing this !.... Luckely the 504 can still be do...

I would like to thank you guy's in here.

I have successfully upgraded my Archos 40gb to a 160gb Samsung drive. I am now running firmware 1.6.23

Followed the instruction in this thread and works fine.

You are talking about the Serial Number for the Volume you just created with format. It is most likely they are using the Hardware Serial that is programmed into the Firmware in the drive. Which cannot be changed. So changing the Serial in the Boot sector probably wont achieve anything. Charles
