I've only had a few dvds that won't rip properly, and that's usually fixed by using a program to rip the image of the dvd, and then encoding the files.

Anyone who has contact info for any of the companies that make products for the Archos, or accessories that seem to be used most (i.e. Shure, newmp3technology.com, etc..), post it here.

Perhaps the mods will make a sticky out of this, and then it'll be that much easier to get in touch ...

Perhaps if you hooked up a line-in to your TV from your computer, and then used the DVR station to record from the TV to your archos...

You'll have to change the ID tags on your PC first.

What did you use to rip the CD's? iTunes is a pretty easy fix.

Just go into the song info, and there's a pulldown menu for the genre.

For the 704?...

Well, I know for my 604 I can max out the settings, and have it play wonderfully. 720x... something.

not too sure what it is, but I know that my encoder won't go any higher.

So, if thats on the 604, I imagine that the 704 will handle just about anything you can dish at it.

vista's still basically a beta, so you're gonna have a 'fun' time finding support for for it.

Not too many things are working with it at this point. Wait for Service Pack 1 to be released for it, and you should be running pretty.

The Andy W is correct! I use the 2-pass encoding when I encode my dvd's as well. It doesn't make the file any larger, and it looks like a million bucks better.

If you're using a Mac, I suggest Handbrake. Best program that I've found so far.

And I'm encoding mine as .AVI, at an average of 1000kbps ...

Select the 'General' tab in the Advanced preferences menu, and then select your Archos as the destination. Now, here's where it gets tricky.

You can only select on folder to put things in. So, you can't split the movies up into the 'Video ...

I went from a 60gb iPod, to a 30gb Archos 604.

I thought at first that I was going to not like the transition back to a 30gb media player, but in all honesty, it's really not that big of a deal.

The only problem that I've found so far is that I can't carry my entire music library with me. But ...
