what makes you think it could work - assuming you are accessing the 604 via the USB connection then you need the processor in the 604 to be active to interpret commands to/from the hard-drive - no battery = no processor activity (I suspect the 4 pin connector to the battery uses a couple of these as...

you are probably stuffed! - unless the seller (or supplier) had left an early revision of the software on the machine then the firmware looks for a specific hd identity . Prior to about rev 1.55. it was possible to downgrade to an earlier software revision (1.4.x) which would then allow a new HD (a ...

if you did some research on the site you would soon learn that the Archos 04 + 05 series are locked down tight - you can run whatever Archos allows to run - if you have an upgraded system you cannot even swop hard-drives

there is a small hidden ext2 partition on the hard-drive which contains a copy of the O/S etc but the reformat should only reformat the FAT partition thus you lose any music etc there - the plugins (actually they are in already in the code - all you buy are the keys) + any updates should remain unto...

but it's not open as it's been tviotised - until someone cracks that nothing can be changed - I too would like to change the filing system and bought hoping that it was truely open rather than an OSS leech. Maybe GPLv.3 will force a change.

I'll be very suprised if Archos release the key - their DRM relies on keeping tight control of the machine (thus blame Micro$oft et al) - in future the GPLv3 may well prevent Archos from ripping off the work of others and locking it down.

If it was water then the most likely damage is that the battery is dead - place the device in a warm dry area for a few days to make sure all water trapped inside has evaporated and replace the battery. If the drink contains sugar then rinse the device in large amount of clean water then dry as abov...

but if you can get the archos to provide a signed version of any arbitary string (aka hd id) then you don't need to reflash merely use the update facility to add program to read a file contents then write back a signed string - after this you can sign any program since all it appears to use is the c...

I believe the Arc library problem (eg non appearance of newly moved files) is when files older than the 'thumbnail' descriptor in each directory are moved across - they are not seen unless you force a cache clearance. If you cannect the Archos as a hd to a PC then by removing one of the arc index fi...

I wonder how Archos checks that the hd has not been replaced post firmware 1.5 - if it uses the same SHA coding on the hd id as it does on file checksums then, if there is a way of modding the hd id it uses, then possibly the scheme of retrofitting firmware 1.4 then upgrading firmware (which presume...

The 504 has a dual partion harddrive - a very large FAT partition used to store music etc + a much smaller ext2 partition (not usually readable by windoze unless you install drivers and even then I think windoze doesn't like dual partitioned drives) this ext2 partition is apparently used to store th...

did you copy the hidden ext2 partion from the 40GB to the 160GB (ie install two dissimilar partions on the 160GB - if so how did you choose the partitions) or was the 160GB merely formatted as a single 160GB FAT partition. If the latter then it would appear that the player from running from software...

there is in option buried somewhere to play all tracks (no shuffle etc) as I find clicking on 1st just contines thro to end of cd - however, if like me, you are a classical music listener then the easiest is to make a playlist for all or part (eg each multitrack work) on the cd (or for operas over m...

look up USB in wikipedia - suspect the ID pin must be grounded to make it a master OTG A- the slave (ie power accepting)OTG B needs the id floating (which I guess the 220k does)
