Why hardcode srt files onto the video?!?!? The whole point is that srt files are viewable with the latest firmware.

As for sub files, the main problem with that hardcoding is that you're recompressing an already compressed video. Converting the sub files to srt is a better way to go.

Anamorphic widescreen

Does anyone know why the 504 plays anamorphic widescreen files properly if they're MPEG2 (either VOB or DVB), but won't do the same with anamorphic AVIs/MP4s? Is the is the anamorphic flag different for both formats?

will try that if all fails. Using AVS tools, If I encode to MP4 the profile is MPeg4/acc the file size is 700mb extension Mpeg4 but if i do it to AVI the profile is MPeg4/MP3 it comes out at 1100mb ext is AVI. Confused It might be because it's using a higher bitrate for the MP3 than the AAC, but it...

I must say I've never had a problem - you're not trying to set bookmarks on more than 16 files, are you?

But removing the black bars is generally a good idea if you can, otherwise you lose precious bitrate by encoding blackness!

As far as I'm aware, most encoding progs can crop the black from a frame.

No, it's not if you haven't done it yourself. Just quote trading standards laws and all the others and do it a loud vioce so all the other customers can hear. Works for me every time ;)

Can't work, won't work. The plugin is tied into the specific hardware it's going to run on. No-one else's will work on yor machine, so if you want it, you'll have to stump up the cash.

In addition, the Archos only supports h.264 baseline, ie no CABAC and no B frames - so you'll have to turn off these options in Recode. When I did a test encode with B frames it was very jerky.

Then you'll have to decide whether h.264 baseline is any better than divx/xvid at the same bitrate...

As carheex316 said, it's more likely that you've just got a duff one. I've never had a moment's problem with mine - touch wood - having used it constantly for 4 months. Take it back to your supplier, try another one and if THAT also fails to work then give up, but I'm fairly sure you'll finally be i...

They might have packed bitstreams - you can check by using GSpot. If they do, then you can 'unpack' them by using Mpeg4Modifier, which saves re-encoding them.

Thank you so much guys - you've made my day :D

Just an aside: I've just read that the MPEG LA charges nothing for the first 100,000 h.264 units and then 20 cents per unit after that, reducing eventually to 10 cents.

If this is in fact true, then that could easily have been abosorbed into the price, or the plug-in should be substantially cheaper.

im pretty sure its solid state memory in the 30gb models and a hard drive in the larger ones. You won't get much change out of shedloads for 30GB of flash with regards to the encoding software it wouldnt be hard to provide it on the website... What, like http://www.archos.com/support/download/softw...

Cowon DO charge for it, it's just part of the original cost rather than an add-on, so you don't notice it.

And Panda, I think it's a bit harsh to blame Archos for your having to spend £65 on new headphones :D
