nasi, pmpmoja, I'll bet two packs of cigarettes from the Stalag 17 film that most of the stuff you've got on your Mp3 players were downloaded from p2p networks or copied from a friends Mp3 player without the consent of the RIAA. People mostly don't bother ripping their own CDs at all, unless those ...

That is a shame, and a rather poor decision on Apple's part.

Still, given their agnostic stance on hacking the device I guess someone will come along with an alternative.

It does push the swingometer a little in the Archos direction.

You've got 110 million iPods mostly nanos which have 99% of their storage capacity mostly used for playing pirated music.. Ahh, the overyly-simplistic logic that is the backbone of many an RIAA crusade. I don't have any DRM'd music on my iPod. I also don't have any pirated music on their. By your r...

If you look at the photos of the touch you can see that there are already calendar and contacts apps on there, so the touch already has basic PIM capability. How that app works I don't know as they don't make a big deal of it but I suspect it is the same as the Calendar app on the iPhone (if you wan...

jjneff, for me the choice basically comes down to: touch: UI, built-in TV out (no bulky dock to carry around), reliability, customer service 605: screen size/resolution, capacity, greater codec support, DVR dock In addition to that there is the potential for 3rd party apps. The touch will probably b...

The 605 uses samba for it's file sharing. So if you enable samba on your Mac then it *should* let you access files over the network. I can't test that myself though (or istockphoto) as I don't have a 605 ÔÇô┬ácurrently deciding whether to get one of these or an iPod TouchÔǪ Each has it's pros and c...

Are you trying to tell me that you do not see a difference there? Of course there is a difference and I am by no means defending Apple on this one. However that difference is academic in light of the following: Yes all DRM is CRAP Exactly. Thank you. That is the one point that we both agree on. but...

I don't think that the iPhone is really based on any OSX, that is just a marketing term used by Steve Jobs. I think it's just a ARM+DSP based platform, I don't think the iPhone is x86, is it? I think if the iPhone is not running OSX then it would have been pointed out by now but all the people who ...

Yup, you miss a lot. Apple's DRM is crap, Apple should be sued to bankrupcy: http://www.wired.com/gadgets/portablemusic/news/2007/09/wma_apple All DRM is crap, no exceptions. You did watch the video you refer to didn't you? They have a go at Microsoft and Sony just as much as they do at Apple. Whil...

Windows sharing?

Do you have 'Windows Sharing' enabled on your Mac? This is what Apple call SMB/Samba and is the protocol used by the 605 to look for networked computers.

By default it is turned off. You need to go into System Preferences, under 'Sharing'.

I had a feeling that the TV+ would pretty much duplicate the functionality of the 605. I guess it's worth waiting to see what it's actually like when it comes out before making the decision. What would be nice if it was possible to dock the 605 with the TV+ as a 605, rather than just an external HD....

Well this is what is supposed to change with the gen5, this is what it and its ACP is designed for, getting it more broadly distributed. What, exactly, is so great about the Archos Content Portal? For the most part it will be selling protected content ÔÇô┬áthat is, media files encrypted with Window...

Hackability

Ironically, one of the features that compels me to the Touch more than the 605 is the fact that it is easier and more likely to be able to get third-party applications onto the Touch. Apple like to lock you in, yes (as with their codecs) but the system is running on a version of OSX and there is an ...

TV+ and DVR Dock?

I am considering getting a 605 and was originally planning on getting a DVR Dock to go with it. But, having looked at the specs of the TV+ I am also tempted to get that as well. The big question is is there any point or advantage to having both the DVR Dock and the TV+? Or will the TV+ do everything...

Sorry to drag the conversation back on topic ;) Personally, I don't think most here know what animorphic widescreen is. Some think that if there are black bars that's bad... but that MEANS NOTHING (sorry to shout, but some people have no clue). I'm not really sure what you're saying here. I only ...

Cinema plugin = anamorphic file support?

What, exactly, does the Cinema Plugin do? According to Archos it will (amongst other things) play VOB files. Now in order to play those files correctly, the plugin will have to understand anamorphic files as that is how most widescreen DVDs are formatted. Anamorphic support has been occasionally dis...

The opposite is also true for CRTs and plasmas, but since these units do have LCD screens that is something of a moot point.

white text on black background if its sensible to save power and easy on the eyes (slightly OT) It may be easier on the eyes but it won't make the slightest bit of difference to the power (in fact it will actually use slightly more). The LCD layer in the screen does not generate light. Instead, whe...

You are correct about the SC-101, which is not really a NAS at all but a SAN (Storage Array Network). It uses custom device drivers that run on the client PC that access the SAN over the network and present it to the operating system as a local hard drive. That is why it will only work with Windows ...

Tivo used to be in the UK as well. They pioneered the PVR years before Sky+ came along. Unfortunately they pulled out of the UK market but the service still runs here and there are still a lot of Series 1 TIVOs around and being well-used in the UK. The biggest shame is that TIVO has software feature...
