So does anyone even know why the Archos needs feedback on what its connected to? I mean really, does it use that info somehow? We should be able to set what kind of connection there is out of the DVR station, and the Archos should not even care, it should just output the proper signal.

You will need to put the signal through some sort of amplification. The signal out of the Archos is simply not strong enough drive speakers to the volume levels you want. Whether a boom box with audio inputs would be good enough or whether you need a even more more powerful amplifier, I don't know ...

While you can certainly rip the whole disc to your Archos, it wouldn't do you any good. There is no software DVD player to take advantage of menus and such. You can only play videos one file at a time.

Have you set your 604 to output to S-video? The default is composite.

Just to confirm....I used AnyDVD 6.1.1.3 to remove any protections. I then used DVDdecryptor to rip the DVD to my HDD. I then used PocketDivixEncoder to enode to .AVI and then transferred to my 504. I had no problems this way.

Nope, a DVDFab produced avi doesn't work for me either on my 604WiFi. No idea what the problem is.

The FAT 32 file system limits files to 4 GB or smaller. vob files even right at the 4GB limit play just fine. Now there may be an issue with avi's over 2GB. If thats what you are using, I'd suggest re-encoding so the file size is less than 2GB.

I'm pretty much a newbie to ripping DVDs to my PC. Once the files are ripped they appear as several VOB files. How do I join them back into one movie on the Archos? Or is there some way to make the rips only make one VOB file? Please, keep it simple!!
