Thu Nov 08, 2007 3:26 am Bored of My iPod Touch
I'm sorry but I have to say it after playing with my ipod im bored. Yes, I've jailbroken it (hacked), I have all the apps you could think of,BUT it's not clicking. I'm not as excited as I was 2 weeks ago, because it's TOO think, can you believe that. It doesn't feel solid and it doesn't play movies NEARLY as gorgeously as Archos 605 Wi-Fi. Now I'm debating whether I should give Archos another shot or wait out until Archos unleashes they're new product next year or so. Now that I know I think the Archos will be in my hands. Only one thing to figure out, how bad is the wi-fi. On my iPod i can surf the net for about 4-6 hours before it's dead. I hear on the archos it's as bad as 1/2 an hour to 1hour.

Whoever told you 30-60 minutes of wi fi is way, way wrong. I get many hours, probably between 5-8 hours of just web surfing on my 160gb 605. I saw the ipod touch. It looked kinda cheap. The plastic bezel around the screen is what i am referring to.

when you say 30 mins I guess you are referring to battery life - but the battery life on the archos allows you to surf for a lot more than 30 mins... I would say 5 hours.

I have both products, initially I got the Touch while I was waiting on my 605. Now the Touch is sitting in its dock a lot of the time and I'm taking the 605 just about everywhere if that tells you anything  For sure, the sound quality of the 605 is significantly better than the Touch, the touch screen is a lot better, and of course the screen itself is a lot bigger and nicer.

yeah whoever said thirty minutes for web surfing must have had a bunk unit. I was using it yesterday for at least 45 minutes and only lost 1 of the 5 power bars (this was using a lot of flash vid with sound too). Of course, wifi shouldn't take as much power as video with sound out of the external speaker but this kind of use (flash vid w/ sound and wifi) is quite draining. But I would say 5+ hours is a conservative estimate. And the good news is that the contrast on most web pages is so high that you can turn down the back light and brightness settings a bit which can give even more power.

I've just played MP3s via Wifi from my media server all afternoon, that's from 12.30 till 6pm. Now down to 1 bar but still working OK. Provided the display and hard disk are off, the battery life is excellent. It's swings and roundabouts, you can't have such a high quality screen and 160GB disk without paying something in power consumption!

+1
I just returned my Archos 605 80gig this morning to Wal-Mart with the web browser plug-in & cinema plug-in installed.
The batter life on these units is atrocious. It’s an absolute joke. Mine also came with 5 stuck pixels.
I decided that, while its definitely cool to browse the web, download videos, and watch movies on the high res screen, what good is it if you have to recharge it after 2 hours of use.
So ZUNE 80gig here I come.

Hey I've had pretty lousy battery life with my 80 gig too ... thats ironic that the 160 gig would do better.

So how many charge/discharge cycles did you test with the new firmware or are you just pulling statistics out of your ass?
