For ARCHOS 70b internet tablet running Honeycomb (3.2) use this file:
http://update.archos.com/9/gen8v2avx9/g ... os_it3.aos

For ARCHOS 70b internet tablet running Android 2.2 (Froyo) use this file:
http://update.archos.com/8/gen8v2/gen8v ... d_gen8.aos

which one is mine? I need an IT one to install Linux.

On the site archos, they say that 3.2 is a G9 so I would need a it4 ?

Do not try to install the firmware 3.2.77 (Honeycomb - Android 3.2) on a 7ob IT with Android 2.2 Froyo !!!

The tablet will be dead ! Several French users have lost their tablet like that (tablet bricked).

Install the firmware 2.4.81 (Android 2.2) on a 7ob IT with Android 2.2.
Install new firmware 3.2.77 (Android 3.2) on a 7ob IT with Android 3.2.

The models seem to be differents even if they have the same name.

The 2.2 tablet - Gen 8 - is received when you by a 7o IT.
The 3.2 tablet - Gen 9 - when you buy a 7ob IT (less expensive !).

This is the correct file:

firmware_archos_it3.aos
http://update.archos.com/9/gen8v2avx9/g ... os_it3.aos

Well, it's not really wrong, just a bit misleading.

From the Archos side of things... any of their devices that were initially released or sold with the Android Honeycomb OS (3.x.x) are considered as Generation 9 devices. That's why the 70b with Honeycomb is listed in the G9 section along with the 80 and 101 G9 tablets (because they also originally started out with Honeycomb).

Unfortunately, Archos tends to like to mess with people's head by using the SAME model number for several different hardware models. And, they really got way too carried away with using "70" in the model name of a bunch of devices, which makes it really hard for anyone to know just what is what.

Anyway, just about ALL of those are now obsolete and they do not even sell them anymore. As far as I know, the ONLY 7" tablet they actually do still sell is the "70b with Honeycomb" and that is the only "70" that is Google "certified" (don't mean it works right, just means it does come with Google Market/Play already installed).

So, if anyone has an Archos 70b that came with Honeycomb already, then the newest firmware can be found on Archos download website in the G9 section for "Archos 70b internet tablet Android 3.2". Doubt if there will be any new firmware, but the most current one is 3.2.81 and was released way back in February 22, 2012.

For anyone that has a 70b that came with Froyo (Android 2.x.x), they need to drop down one section below the G9 area to just "INTERNET TABLETS" and the select "Archos 70b internet tablet Android 2.2". The last firmware for those devices is 2.4.83 and was released on March 22, 2012.

Not sure why anybody would even have a problem with firmware now anymore because it's already almost a year since either one had any firmware upgrades released, and BOTH of those download links have red letters saying that you can NOT install the firmware on a device that came with the other firmware. You can NOT upgrade a Froyo device to Honeycomb!

Meanwhile Arhcos has made a total mess of the "real" G9 device (the 80 and 101 G9's). They started out with a 1Ghz CPU with only 512Meg of system RAM, then they started changing hardware (multiple times) on up through "turbo" models. The original ones (now often referred to as the "classic" models) came with Honeycomb, but half way into the "turbo" models Archos not only increased the CPU speeds (1.2Ghz up to 1.5Ghz), but also increased to 1GB RAM and then started saying they could later be upgraded to ICS. Well, so far, that hasn't worked out very well except for a very few lucky people that just happened to end up with the right hardware out of the bunch.

Now, to further make of mess of things... they released the 101XS that started out with ICS, but said it could upgrade to Jelly Been (and have just released a Jelly Bean upgrade, but it doesn't work correctly with either ICS or Jelly Bean at this point in time).

No idea why Archos keeps trying to make such a mess of things, but now they're selling the GamePad and releasing the 80XS both with Jelly Bean to start with (and neither of them works right either).

Hmm, in the above I've mentioned 6 different Archos devices and not a single one of them works correctly yet. Am I the only one noticing a horribly bad trend by Archos?

New Year coming, new devices coming, and I really doubt if any of my new devices will ever have the Archos name on them when I get 'em LOL.
