Fri Jun 15, 2007 11:37 am CNET's take on Gen 5
Here's what those guys are saying...looks like the "YouTube on the fly" capability etc. is getting a lot of attention (and the fact that the iPhone can't do this !!!!!!!!!).

hmmm is skype a possibility? then the iPhone is doomed forever :P
consider the price of a 4gb iPhone + contract to a 4gb 605WiFi with skype - hard choice?

Fri Jun 15, 2007 3:41 pm not so likely.
skype won't save the day since you have to have wifi coverage for it. wifi is not ubiquitous yet. or could you stand walking to some obscure wifi hotspot each time you make a call - or expect one?

That 5G Archos stays in sleep mode for many days. So just imagine this:
A HSDPA module with a sim-card slot, one that can with it's own little battery or pulling power from the Archos proprietary connector, it can stay connected to 3.5G network non stop. It could thus provide an always-on connection, providing an IP presence for the Archos in all, it would then simply wake up the Archos from sleep mode on incomming Skype calls. Would work also for any other Internet presence activity, like push email, instant messaging like Jabber or proprietary networks, and the SIP or other VOIP networks. This can be done with the 605 WiFi, it just needs a smart little HSDPA/3G/EDGE/GPRS module. That module might not be cheap, over 100$, but it would probably be subsidized by the telco partnering with Archos to provide this module. I'm sure this will happen in the next few months. There will also be further 605 WiFi models with HSDPA sim card built-in, but having HSDPA on an add-on module would probably also work fine.
